What did the seller say about it?
OK
A while a go I have a Alternator fail. Reg stopped working. I was in a rush to get going and ordered a cheep copy alt from SA off ebay. Good seller and all that. Fitted the alt and all seamed good. A few weeks later I went camping and my fridge stopped after 2 days.(should go for 4) So after a run up the beach and back I only got a night out of it. After some checking I found that the charge voltage was only13.2. At this volts it was only half charging my batteries. I ordered 2 new regs of ebay out of the UK and fitted one to my old alt and one to the newer alt. The copy alt fired up and now charges to 14.2v and all seems fine again.
I did find how ever that the reg from the copy alt has a extra bit. And I now wonder if this was the problem. In the attach pix the copy reg is to the top note the resin filled back with the wires coming out. Was wondering if I cut the wires off would this fix the voltage problem. Like the old FE55 regs where you cut the wire to up the voltage a bit.
So has anyone else had this problem.

What did the seller say about it?
cant answer your question, but your post did make me unpack my spares box and check out my regulator, which looks exactly like the lower one in your pic.
the ebay seller was repairkitsuk , which at first glance looks to be Repair Kits Suck, but Repair Kits UK had a bit more cred !
I also got the Td5 Altenator brush kit and Starter repair kit, all worth carrying on a long trip.
Cant really tell from the pics as to how the extra bit is wired in but I suspect it may be some sort of noise suppression or filter device? If that is the case it is possible for it to muck up output and or regulation of voltage. Note that I said possible and it may not be a filtering device, just it could be.
Cheers Scott
