Gday All,
I have just placed an intro in the Members Introduction section. I am doing an engine replacement for my 1999 D2. I am going alright to this point. However, my patience started to grow a bit thin this afternoon when trying to access the top RH engine to gearbox bolt. I am seeking advice regarding the specific trick or tool (or spell or dance) to get it off.
The rave manual (in Engine-td5, Repairs, Engine and ancillaries, para 49) shows the bolt. In reality, I have found the top RH bolt to be in a very awkward place indeed. I am only concerned with the top RH as the others undone with relative ease. The bolt is 13mm. I have added a photo that shows the approximate location.
Can someone share with me how they approached this one? I have tried to use the ring spanner from above but the location relative to the fire wall prevents me from getting the breaker bar on to it. The open end spanner wanted to slip and round the corners so I stopped that quick smart. The socket from underneath the car appears to be the best bet so far but I am struggling to get any purchase on to it. I only spent a few minutes on this particular course of action before I decided that I would call it a day.
Any general or specific advice would be appreciated.
Never pulled the engine in the D2, but have removed 3(!) engines from D21 Navaras and have had difficulty with a bolt in the exact same position.
I ended up accessing the bolt from inside the cabin. Removed the access plate for the gearbox shifter, and used two 250mm extensions on a ratchet spanner. Took about 10 mins instead of 3 hours the first time round
If its the last bolt to loosen, you might need to ensure that the engine weight is resting on a jack, or you will find that the weight of the engine or gearbox will be on that bolt, making it harder to remove.
