lash adjusters...can they sieze?
Hi all,
I have a eu3 td5 engine in my disco 2
I have just changed my cylinder head due to
rising oil levels...problem fixed.
I put an AMC head on it, replacing the existing 1
hole head gasket with another 1 hole gasket.
Engine is running well apart from a slight knock.
I have searched the threads and checked the obvious
....still knocking.
When I fitted the lash adjusters to the new head, I
Noticed that dome of them were compressing more
Than others, and a couple wouldn't compress until
I fiddled around with them a bit.
I'm pretty sure that I would have lost some/most of the
Oil out of them. I also failed to keep them upright
before fitting.
I'm thinking they have something to do with the
New knocking noise. Just wondering if anyone out there
Has had a similar experience. And if it is worthwhile
Fitting new lash adjusters......any ideas?
Cheers
Pete

Hi Pete,
Having just fitted an AMC head a week ago I had a brief knock from one lash adjuster that cleared quickly, but I was very careful in fitting one at a time directly from one head to the other. Are your injector rocker adjusters set correctly?

Hi Nick,
Rocker adjusters are set correctly, checked for anything loose...the only thing i can think is that the lash adjusters aren't compressing and releasing properly, that said this is the first head change i've ever done.

Pete,
It does sound like a lash adjuster issue. Maybe standing them upside down in oil overnight will remove any air from them.

Hi Pete,
Before you take the head off did you keep the followers and lash adjusters in their correct matched order? I doubt that a lash adjuster has failed but I don't know how critical keeping them upright is as far as them getting rid of any air is concerned. Are you able to identify which is causing a problem? It would be good if you can avoid taking the head off, perhaps some one else can impart some wisdom on your problem before you do that. I would be wary of reusing the gasket even if you don't move the head as it may interfere with the accuracy of the torqueing process, again some advice on that would be good.

Thanks nick, I kept them in the right order, but I was wondering why is that important
As they all seemed identical. As you suggested, iwill wait and see if anyone else can shed
Some extra light on the subject.

the reason we try to keep things like followers and lifters/lash adjusters matched up is that over the service life they wear/ bed in to each other in specific ways according to minute machining differences. Swapping "bedded" components alters the wear patterns which can cause failure due to mismatched wear areas. hope this is clear enough to understand

Hi Pete,
How careful were you with the sealant on the Cam Cover and what method did you use, as it is possible you have a blocked oil supply to one of the Lash Adjusters?
