In fact many large package industrial A/C units, with TX valves, do not have glasses which is fine when they are operating OK,but can be a PITA when fault finding.:mad
I was waiting for someone that knows about 1million times more about A/C than me to reply The A/C stopped working on my wifes puegeot 407 recently. I found one of the rubber hoses split as by design the twist in it's too much .......... The swearing though ?? I simply couldn't even *find* the bloody receiver drier... I couldn't find it listed online for purchase anywhere .... Talk about tearing my hair out. Do you know what the designers have done (there obviously heavy drug users ). They built the R/D into the side of the bloody condenser .... FFS: You have to replace the entire @#$$@ condenser if the system ever needs to be worked on

Apart from R22 that is being phased out.

As for glasses on auto air systems, many vehicles still have them, our work Tojo and Mitsy vans have them, they are all late model, one is MY13.

The glasses may be there so you can tell what is going on in the system, particularly if it is not working correctly, not as an indicater that the refrigerant charge is correct.
    I have said tickets....

Im waiting for abbot to scrap the carbon tax (yeah like its going to happen) so that the refrigerant becomes affordable again. But in fairness, My opinion on AC is "mate thats either 6hp that could be going to the wheels or staying in the fuel tank, why dont you junk the AC system and use it for something usefull like an Endless air compressor or a secondary alternator for a DBS?"

Should be suited to automotive ac systems too.

Toyota 2006 RAV4. My mate's wife biffed hers just enough to stop the compressor turning by it contacting the chassis. There's bugger all clearance. Broke its drive.

New compressor needed. Toyota genuine $1500 plus. The compressor runs permanently as it has no external clutch, only a rubber flexi drive within the pulley. Refrigerant flow is controlled by an electric solenoid valve in the side of the compressor. So if you get a refrigerant leak, I assume the compressor seizes and wrecks the serpentine belt drive, stopping forwards progress. I managed to get an aftermarket compressor posted from the US for less than half genuine cost. The dessicant lives in a sock which is stuffed up one side of the condenser which needs to be removed to access the plug in the bottom through which you feed the dessicant bag. Recharged with hydrocarbon gas by weight (1/2 that of the R134 that was in it), seems to work OK. Bloody plastic crud.

Handy as, those instruments. Especially in long liquid runs where there'a a S/G at the header but none near the expansion device.
Wish I could afford one. 😕

on most of them they have a removable filtering medium, but you usually have to remove the condensor first to get to it., the worst ones drop in from the top
