Both upgrades you are referring to are on my list. I am going to Melb on Friday hoping to come home with four shockers, two front springs and rear spacers for the SLS.
I want to run bigger tyres(31.6in) and I see this far more important than ECU upgrade.
As for performance increase. I drove a chipped Td5 with a bigger inter-cooler and ACE before I purchased mine. It was this drive that made my choice of what to replace my D1 with. I was tossing up between a Defender and a D3.
At one point of this drive I had an old 16 foot caravan on the rear, and was blowing away traffic from the lights.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

In my opinion you should chip it. $350 will transform the vehicle for the better. A straightforward, relatively cheap, lift kit is possibly not the best solution to aid your load capacity. As said before, air bag helpers in the rear would be better. You can do both for less than the cost of the lift kit you mentioned. Have your cake and eat it.
