Had 245/70r16 on my 02 td5 didn't leave the car wanting for get up and go but I replaced rear diff broken pinion,gear box,rear wheel bearing and had uni joints replaced. Uni joints were just a precausion don't know if theses problems were related to larger tyers or not but I now run 235/70r16 genral grabbers at2 with no problems.

I have just fitted 255 70 16 BFG ATKOs to my D2TD5.
They are 30.5 inches or about 3% bigger than stock.
AFAIK they do not rub anywhere ( haven't been on full articulation yet) but I don't think they will. This is even with the bump stops shortened to normal 16 inch tyre length. They also fit almost exactly on the back door without flipping the carrier.
Tempe Tyres were selling them 2 weeks ago for $250 each!!!! My guess is that they privately imported them from the USA.
I am really happy with them as they are quiet and seeing I have had them almost exclusively without a puncture since 1977, I have great confidence in BFG.

My D2a came with LT 245/70s fitted. It's a bog standard Td5 and I have no complaints regarding the performance. I'll in all likelihood stick with this size.

I am running 245/75 16's with a standard TD5.
Had no issues driving with trailer to Brisbane and back, and without the trailer I have no complaints even when full of passengers.

Hey it's a Td5 my expectations weren't huge to start, but cruising on 110 wasn't an issue.

Mine does have a 2" lift but it is established it won't rub, mainly commenting on engine driving the large profile tyre.

a better question might be--
do I need oversize tyres to get to the cape?

Another consideration is Light Truck rating. I've got new Bfg all terrains and they are 245/70s in LT construction as they don't do LT tyres in the standard size. I went down from 235/85 because I live in the hills and the D2 was slooooow as with the defer sized tyres. Goes like stink now

And yes, standard size tyres (or thereabouts) will get you to the cape with no problems

Good question - standard verse oversize for the cape, have been happy with standard tyres to date but thought that a little more clearance under the diff could be of benefit. Interested in your thoughts as my only experience being bogged has been in deep ruts with a grounded diff.

I have 247x75x16 fitted. Apart from the speedo under reading, no problems. Seems you need to go to a 245 to get LT construction which is better for off road in my opinion.
