This should be an interesting post. I have a TD5 and have reached 388,000K
fitted an AMC Turner head last month uses negligible oil, cylinders still look good with honing marks, not used off road much but I know it can't go on for ever.

At the moment I am rebuilding another td5, this is the second one and both seem to have ingested a reasonable amount of dirt,so this has me wondering what the leading cause of engine failure on a d2 is , particularly td5 ones,I realize that early on oil pump bolts and cracked heads may have been a problem, but now most will have been fixed,so what is now the worst enemy?
edit: I guess this could also include defenders as well, they look to have a very similar airbox and obviously many had the same motor as well.
cheers james

I had to replace my TD5 at 153K - I never quite got to the bottom of it from my then mechanic, who had just done a major refurb of hoses, radiator, intercooler etc, but problems with the turbo put a hole in an exhaust valve.
Possibly could have just repaired the damage , but I would never have been sure there wasn't other collateral damage after it was then driven 60 km by my unfortunate son and emptying all the engine oil on my advice by phone with me thinking it had just gone into limp mode from his non mechanical description (hes an excellent emergency/intensive care doctor though!).

I'll go with oil leaks. One more major leak and I may set fire to it. Lol
My first TD5 threw a rod, the previous owner had fitted a new oil cooler just before selling, so it probably ran low on oil, or contaminated the oil and 20,000 km later it went bang.
My second one died just as suddenly, but I believe it was from dirty diesel I picked up on the Nullabor. The engine leaned out which somehow made the valves stick breaking a rocker and then the cam chain.
