    td5 auto harshness on acceleration

As the subject says am experiencing a certain harshness on acceleration with my disco its only done 114k klms ..it does have muddys on it but I think they can be discounted..Does feel OK when cruising at 100....
I got keen last year and changed auto trans filter and the trans oil over to Nulon 100% syntheytic...I did read a thread about different oils to use when I did it??..
Any thoughts out there as to where I should be looking ?? I will be climbing in underneath to check stuff....
I would appareciate some help as I am about to embark on a sea change very shortly and want to get this sorted and get the disco reliable !
Will be going in to see our local hero Ivan to try and sort out the 3 amigoes too must be the season for it seeing some of the other posts cheers Steve

Also check the rubber donut in the rear tail shaft. When these collapse it will also vibrate when accelerating.
    Cheers

OK by harshness I mean it sounds like a real raspy sound and there is a roughness to the feel of it when accelerating fairly hard (I wonder if it could be the turbo noise ?? my cousin in the UK had a 300tdi that would let us know when the turbo was winding up)...I cant quite explain it any other way it also manifests itself about 2200rpm around that range but sit on 110 on freeway and its quite ok by diesel standards ...on top of this I am comparing to my mate's navaras and prados so am I being paranoid ...turn the msuic up ... seriously I think it should be better than it is ... but will go back to check trans mounts bolts on exhaust covers etc etc as mentioned in posts will keep you informed. cheers Steve

If you use the hand brake alone to hold it on a steep incline does it idle rougher? Front and rear down hill?. If it does then probably mounts, or some sort of interference/ clearance issue.

I've had vibrations at various revs due to

    Failed harmonic balancer
    Failed dm flywheel
    Loose bonnet hinges
    Collapsed engine mounts

Probably dozens of other things to check.

The End...It all got too much for me!! Went to see the local guru who has not only taken the beast for a wee drive and pronounced it acceptable but has cleared up the 3 amigoes with his thingy that plugs into the thing!!
He did say there was a wee bit of driveline vibe and advised me to check out all the unis on the driveline (cardan joint esp) and check out of car and if ANY stiffness replace ....then proceeded to show me one he had on the hoist that had let go...serious amounts of $$$ and missing bits of metal from auto trans...oops...So this weekend or sometime soon up on the hoist and removal of prop shafts ...thanks to all who commented cheers Steve

There is a known vibration at approx 2250 to 2500 rpm with the Td5, not a problem once cruising.

This sounds like an issue covered by one of the LR Tech Bulletins:

"A 'CHATTERING' NOISE FROM THE CENTRE CONSOLE AREA/HANDBRAKE
The noise can be particularly prominent on Td5 automatic derivatives when
operating between 2000 rpm and 3000 rpm.
    CAUSE:
The handbrake shoes are not held down sufficiently at the top where the cross strut
locates. This allows the shoe to vibrate against the back plate under certain engine
loads. The noise is then transmitted into the cabin.
    ACTION:
Should a customer express a concern of the above and a chattering noise is
confirmed, follow the rectification procedure to replace the handbrake shoe
retaining springs and modify the left-hand brake shoe. "

My truck has just started making a noise at about 2200-2700rpm when accelerating reasonably hard up a hill. Sounds a bit like a heat shield that is vibrating but I can't find any heat shields that are loose (main silencer and l/h engine mount are two I've checked) and it seems to fit the tech bulletin. I'm about to order the springs and have a crack at it. PM me a line if you're interested in the rest of the tech bulletin.

    cheers,

The bulletin on brake chatter is also posted up in the Td5 Vibrations thread.

    bidds,

If you manage to get the Red Springs mentioned in the bulletin could you advise the part number as despite ordering them I received Black Springs. I believe the Red are stronger and necessary for the mod.
