OK everyone thanks for your great feedback, plenty of options to work on from your info. When it is sorted I'll give feedback.

I have had exactly what you describe and found that the replacement belt was slightly longer than the original.
I also found that the replacement belt (a Gates) had a smooth back this seemed to cause the squealing.

    Interesting post this one.
Today I looked at my former TD5 D2, brother In law owns it now.
Says he is getting the usual 3 amigos and the ALT light on.
He knows that the bearing behind the fan/viscous is knackered.
I says start it up......engine starts..... the belt isnt moving.
Plenty of tension on it, the bearing has seized in one spot and the belt wont move.
I had to do a double take on this, it was that strange.
He has a new bearing, if it is the right part it is quiet large considering its not doing a lot.

For his sake I hope it's not spinning the harmonic balancer on the crank

When driving and this or one of the other bearings seize the belt will burn through.
It often takes the harmonic balancer out with it.
Have a good look at all the components on the belt system.
    Cheers, Kyle

    Ongoing

I have decided to change the viscous hub bearing and fan, in any case.
Have slotted this job after the small matter of replacing the transfer case!
The motor does "chirp" when stopped, (see also previous posts.)

Have read the excellent posts and tutorials herewith, there is an ERR5285 listed on Ebay for $135.00.
Worth doing, worth Dulux? Or a cheaper good quality bearing? What have others used?

From what I have read, on the forum & elsewhere, chirping when stopping is a classic harmonic balancer symptom. Excellent tutorial here ,
