    It seems the C3 is toleranced for interference fits.
    As the bearing housing (front cover) would cause the bearing outer race to shrink.

    Fanbelt slippage culprit

    Hi folks, said I would report back when problem solved.

    Turned out to be a faulty tensioner, which is "notchy" - ie does not deliver a linear amount of torque to the belt, locks up at different stages, causing less torque and intermittant belt slippage.

    Kicking myself for not cottoning-on sooner, as I noticed some slippage after replacing the old unit 2 years ago!

    A genuine idler / pulley assembly plus genuine belt on way.
