    Maybe.

    Passive immobilisation prevents the vehicle from being started unless the authorised key is used to start the vehicle.

    There are only two configurations for passive immobilisation:
    * passive immobilisation not active
    * passive immobilisation active

    When the ignition is switched off, the vehicle remains mobilised for up to a maximum of 5 minutes. If however the driver's door is opened, after 2 minutes 30 seconds, the vehicle remains in a mobilised state for a further 30 seconds.
    When the timer in the BCU has expired, the vehicle is immobilised.

    Once the ignition is switched on, the BCU transmits a coded signal to the ECM. If the coded signal does not correspond to the programmed code in the ECM, the ECM is inhibited and the BCU inhibits the starting circuit.

    In order for passive immobilisation to occur, the following conditions must be met:
    * Driver's door closed.
    * Fuel cut-off switch not tripped.
    * Key not inserted in ignition.
    I know my hawkeye could turn this setting on and off in the BCU, and I'm pretty sure that nanocom can too. I don't have a D2 anymore to test or compare keys.

    It can be done with a Nanocom.

    So that is what is "wrong" with mine.
    When it wouldn't start at the fuel station and the shopping centre it was because those conditions for passive immobilaisation were met.LOL
    You learn something every day.
    I know my passive immobilisation is enable asI wondered what it did when I scrolled through Nanocom.
    I have also learned that for one touch down to operate you have to press the window button for less than 0.4 of a second. AFAIK different to most cars evan AFAIR ny RRC where you usually press for longer to get one touch.

    Why with the original key this doesn't occur but it does with the new key?

    I'm guessing it's the missing RFID transponder chip on the original key.

    It looks like that the problem occurs when the immobiliser is passively activated. According to Rave when you go to start the car in this state ....
    "The BCU controls the passive remobilisation exciter coil (located around the ignition barrel) to generate a magnetic field which causes the handset to transmit a remobilisation signal. The BCU receives the signal and allows the vehicle to be started. If a valid signal from the handset is not received within one minute of the ignition being switched to position II, the BCU stops the passive coil from generating the magnetic field."
    So the ebay key is probably missing the functionality to sense this magnetic field and/or transmit a remobilisation signal. However when the unlock button is pressed it will transmit the signal to the BCU.

    I would guess that disabling the immobiliser setting in the BCU using a nanocom or similar will be a viable workaround....... but doing so may cause insurance/legal issues. For example in WA vehicles by law generally have to have passive immobilisers fitted and operational.

    Cheers

    how are you guys re programming the new remotes??

    Do dealers have to do it for you??

    I have had holdens in the past and you can reprogramme yourself by putting the new remote head in the ignightion.

    Can you do this on discos??

    Unfortunately for the Discoveries you need to have access to an electronic programming device. They aren't as simple as holders, nissans etc. The Nanocom diagnostic tool will do it or go to any independent service specialist or a dealer.

    Cheers

    Looking back, there seems to be two key types. One has 2 small yellow "cubes" on the board and no rfid chip in the small slot on the cover. The other has only one yellow "cube" and the RFID chip. I only saw this recently when attempting to program a key for someone here, interestingly the key with the RFID chip would only ID as the suspension plip but would unlock the car but had the same symptoms of not disabling passive immob. without locking/unlocking.
