By the way, one thing I have noticed is the main fan seems to wobble a little when the engine is running. When I asked the mechanic he said it wasn't an issue, but could this be indicative of something?

Fan wobble suggests the hub bearing is not all it should be.

To be honest the wobble is only minimal and reading up on a guide (Fan Clutch Diagnosis - Engine Cooling System), you should allow up to 1/4" which is about what it may be. The same guide mentions the fan clutch should be changed with the new water pump and I'm not sure this was done when the last owner did it. I'm getting tired of throwing money at the problem though so need to diagnose it for definite.
Tomorrow I'll take the belt off, try to test all of the pulleys and such. Then run it and see if the sound goes away. Might be one step closer to the issue one way or another.
Perhaps before I take the belt off, do you think wd40 on the water pump pulley would be enough to confirm a diagnosis if it is the bearing?
D1 & D2 V8s don't have aux belts, they use 1 long serpentine belt to drive eveything.Quote:

I was going to do this yesterday. Unfortunately my alternator went in the morning - luckily just as I got back home from going to town. I've called the mechanic who apparently serviced it and will try to get a refund. I'll buy a new alternator and install it myself - sick of mechanics and their bull****!
Anyone recommend a cheap option that's available in Oz with quick delivery? I might just go aftermarket as I don't want to fork out $1000.
A result of sorts! The left idler pulley was the culprit for the engine noise. Now new issues to address! Thanks for the help.
