    LIMP Mode for 200km

Went to the Burdekin River yesterday to do a bit of fishing and stay the night. Saw a nice spot that needed a short 30 meter water crossing to get to. Walked the spot and water was just up to the top of my tyres and the bottom felt good enough. Drove in and got stuck just as I was coming out the other side. A few minutes with the winch and I was out.
After my fishing (all to small) I had to go out the way I came in and was prepared to get stuck again. Sure enough another winch job but this time with the extension strap as well. During the second session the Disco was in water up to the top of the wheel arches for a few minutes but sat there idling nicely while I set up the winch etc. Once I was clear I found a nice camp spot and set up for the night and we had the first rain in ages.
Next morning (this morning) I headed out to the highway to meet up with a mate fishing further downriver.
Low and behold, the good old Disco (auto) wouldn't come out of second gear and I had a nice slow drive home. (No I wasn't interested in more fishing).
I'm thinking it might be the XYZ switch on the trannie but this was replaced about six weeks ago and I would have thought it would be a bit more waterproof. No warning lights have come on so far but the cruise control isn't working (possibly because it's in limp mode) and the sport/manual button isn't working.
No water came in through the door seals but one has to open the bloody door to get out and do the winching. The winch extension strap was on the passenger floor so both sides in the front got saturated.
    All this and NO FISH.

Thanks again JC. Just had a look under the seat and can see where the ECU is. Unfortunately my Disco has the DVD player and the control module for that is also under the seat and on top of the ECU. Just means a bit longer to do the job.
    Cheers.

Hi Djam, thanks for the tip. I live in north Qld so it will probably dry in an hour or two on my front balcony. But I will remember the rice thing in case I have the problem again in a cooler place.
Can't see why they put the engine ECU up behind the battery out of the way and the trannie ECU under the seat where it can possibly get wet.
I'm learning about my Disco all the time.
Can be a pain occasionally but it's got a lot more good points than bad points.
    Cheers, Rick.

Joel, you have no idea how many times my wife has asked me that question in the last 24 hrs. Yes, I could have climbed out of the drivers side window but I still had to open the bonnet to turn the isolater switch for the winch and my winch extension strap lives on the floor on the passengers side, usually at the bottom of my recovery gear as I have never had to use it before. Either way, the passengers door would have needed to be opened. In these situations I am usually more interested in getting my vehicle unstuck than worrying about water getting into the vehicle. Unfortunately my previous 4WD vehicles have not been so heavily electronic reliant and while I now know I have a transmission ECU under the passengers seat I didn't know it lived there until informed by justinc on the forums yesterday. I guess I will have to look at making it more waterproof in the future or carry a spare. I do enough water crossings to warrant it.
I don't consider it a set back, I have learned something. I do a lot of off road driving so the more I know about my vehicle the better.
    Cheers, Rick.

Maybe inside the house, in a very low (40 Degree MAX) oven would be better. You'd have to wait forever to dry it thoroughly with those humidity figures up there. Then, just as it dries a bit, around 1 pm, more damp air and even some rain....
