Thread: 2000 D2 V8 Recommended Oil?

Could be almost anything....10w40, 20w-50, semi synthetic, full synthetic??

When you change the oil, I've found the coarser oils like a 20w-50 or oils that say "for older engines" best to use. I tried a 0w-40 full synthetic and while I found I achieved some improvement in fuel economy, the motor was a little rattley when cold or really hot. These are a old tech engine with big oil galleys and since changing to the 20w-50 oil it's as quiet as a mouse.

If you are using an oil like mobil 1 in your pushrod V8 I think you are nuts.
Penrite with extra zinc is the go. HPR 10 10w50 for the summer heat.

They make good stuff...not sure that HPR10 is the best choice however... it's full synthetic. The flat tappet issue still remains. Their mineral -based Everyday 20-50 with "full zinc" is probably a better bet. Indeed am going to change from Magnatec 10-40 ...I hadn't realised Castrol had changed that formulation from mineral to a semi-synthetic.

They have changed their range. Hpr10 used to be a semi synthetic. Penrite do excellent oil. I habe been using castrol magnetic against my better judgment because the guys at Brit Offroad use it and do some work on my truck. I might go the Penrite Gas soon though. With penrite from 100,000 and before that mobile 1 from new at 200, 000 my bottom and top end were like new when I djd a head gasket....

Its not the fact that an oil is synthetic that makes it bad for our engines.
The zinc is the issue for the cams sake, the bearings in your engine will be well served by synthetic oils, lifters and cams are not as well protected without the zinc. HPR 10 is full zinc

Thanks, I'll have a look and see what's available at Supercheap. I've gone ahead and ordered an oil, air and transmission filter so may as well do a quick service. Is there a recommended transmission fluid? It's been a whole since I've had an auto but I imagine there are only one or two types.

I use penerite or nulon.
5w-40 or 10w-40
