nice one PhilipA, for those that have around $500 to spend there is a disc brake conversion available, have'nt tried one myself but i am led to believe they work well , obviously eliminating rattle as well

    Handbrake Rattle

    I did this repair also..

Ours was driving us nuts and made the car sound like a piece of #$#% when it took off.

I wont disagree it was a long job..Although done in a day.. I just ground down the weld marks on the brake shoes.. Then I put a piece of adhesive foam rubber behind the shoes to stop them rubbing or touching the plate ..

    I re-installed the original springs...

I have not had an issue since .. That was 18 months ago...

    Cheers

My handbrake is still not fantastic as the cable appears to have stretched and it doesn't take up early enough.

BTW , I found that why my handbrake was getting soaked was not the rear seal, but the intermediate shaft O ring leaking , dripping onto the handbrake cable which then ran down into the brake drum.

I recently paid lots to have the transfer deleaked and not a drip of oil since it has been done.
I also did the rear of the rocker cover and ( touch Wood) I have not had a drip of oil on the concrete since, which is about 2 months.
    Regards Philip A

Philip, I just tried to upload a PDF file but clearly we are not allowed too!

There are two adjustments for the handbrake. One is on the rear of the drum for the shoes and the other is at the top of the handbrake cable with actually adjusts the outer sheath, not the inner cable. Are you sure they are both adjusted correctly?
Mine works brilliantly on the third click - and before anyone says it's too tight, it's not as A) the drum doesn't get hot from it dragging and I haven't lost the adjustment.

I can elaborate further if you want.

    Regards, Jayden

Ah, yes I know too well about the top adjustment. What a pig of a position.
Mine is adjusted as far as it will go ie all the thread used and showing, and the shoes adjustment bolt is correct or maybe a little tighter than they should be. The shoes/linings are new.
My conclusion is that the cable has stretched as the (new) linings are where the other end anchors, and the backing plate does not seem worn where the outer sits.

At what kilomatage does this rattle start to appear? Mine is nearly due for its 200,000 service and I don't have it.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Mine was bad when I bought it at 134KK. I think the oil from the o ring running into the drum may form a grinding paste so if you don't have o ring leaks it may be better. OR a dealer may have fitted the red springs which mask the problem, but in that case you should be able to feel a distinct "step" when you pull on the handbrake.
