    First time TD5 buyer

    Hi guys,

I am a first time TD5 buyer and am in the market for a discovery 2. I'm looking at a few examples around where I live and many have high kms. I am wondering if I am asking for trouble buying a high k TD5? There is one example with just over 260k but this is the roughest of the bunch, bodywise. The best is unfortunately the one with the highest kms. It has 295k, body and interior in excellent condition, pretty comprehensive log books. All are auto. What are your thoughts? Convince me either way. I will probably only put 50-60k on it over the next 3 years until we plan on getting a newer 4x4 (probably disco 3).

Thanks for any advice you have!

    define high KM's.

your dealing with a vehicle that is made to go a distance.

if it was well maintained and looked after Id have no issues with going for a 500K Km td5 depending on the options and the asking. (but I would personally be looking for a manual more from preference than anything else)

Autos need recoing it seems from around 200ks , overheating from a poorly maintained cooling system is probably the biggest item with older/ higher kms. apart from those and everyday maintenance, as with any car, they are pretty bullet proof regardless of Ks.
As blknight says history is important.

If over 200k see from the history whether the head has had work or the gasket replaced. If not it may need it soonish. A history of regular maintenance is the best thing to look for. I think that if the body and interior is good and it has been well maintained the K's are not so important.

I bought a 350,000km D2 TD5 with a full service history, everything that needed to be done had been done.
I am very happy with it. It's not a daily driver though.
I expect to keep it for a least another 100,000km or so (or until D4's get down to my price range )

    first time buyer

As Pippin says! head should have been done.

I would be looking at the history for the following....

1...Had a head recon. pref. not due to a major overheat issue.

2...Harmonic balancer replaced. It needs to be at high Ks.

3..Cooling system maintained, should have had a new water pump by now.

    4..Bearings,driveshafts etc replaced.

5..Whatever other members suggest to look out for.The advice and assistance on this site is awesome.

I have 300K on my 2001 D2. spent money to keep it well maintained and never regretted my choice of vehicle.

The engine bottom end has never needed to be touched and it goes as well as it ever did.But maintenace is really the key.

Don't forget to check the other stuff like buttons and switches operate what there suppose to do. Doors and windows all lock, unlock open and close. If it's got a sunroof check for leaks etc.

Not an issue but rather a benefit. CDL or at least the internals. Leaks at the SLS as it can be intermittent (isn't reason for a no sale; is just a way to reduce price ).

Head gasket as mentioned. Has exhaust manifold been skimmed/replaced.
Right fluids been used especially in cooling system. Doesn't have to be red (LR recommended) just OAT.

Be aware of the front prop shaft. The originals as you probably are aware are unserviceable and can lead to disaster. Not a reason to not buy just something that should be replaced.

    Any (more than unusual) leaks

If the following has been done then you should have less headaches:
    FPR
Starter motor contacts (easy to replace; difficult to remove starter motor due to top nut)
    Water pump

Just some issues I've come across with my 2002 D2.

If the oil pump bolt's been checked that'll be one less issue.
