Diff plug looks like Billy Idol ?!?!

    Hi All,

    (Disco ii 2000 Td5 Auto 220,000km)

Since I've owned this Disco, I've serviced it periodically as per the information from this web site.

    Engine: 10km
    Auto: 20Km
    Differentials: 20km
    Transfer Box: 20km

20km ago, I serviced the diffs and only noticed that the front diff oil smelled putrid, but the diff plug has only a few little bits of metal shavings.

Last Saturday, on the 20km major service, I noticed the rear diff was in good condition, non putrid smelling oil, very, very little metal shavings.

Then I did the front... My Lord! What's Billy Idol doing on my oil plug?!?! (see image).

Is this normal? Is there an issue with the front ends?

Changes that occurred t=between the 20km services: fitted Cooper STT 245/75R16, balanced and aligned.

Any advice, knowledge will be deeply apriciated.

    Cheers

Are there any big chunks or slithers of metal?
If not and the drive feels normal I wouldnt worry too much about the punky look, just very fine metal dust attracted to the magnet in an appealing punky way

No, big bits of metal. Just shavings, fine shavings mind you.

It's just that the rear was done at the same time and yet the rear is clean and the oil doesn't seem to be as smelly as the front.

    Cheers, Tony.

If there are no chunks, but it feels like a paste, then don't worry about it, fill with good full synthetic oil and keep going. The front diff wears more than the rear because of the turning placing extra pressure on the spider gears etc.

Billy Idol is ok ( unless it runs hot in the city which can bring a shock to the system)

but beware ....if you get a Tina Turner then I smell trouble and it aint right you can be sure a change is gunna come.

    Thank you Winaje.

I'll service the front diff at the same intervals as the engine (10k) to see how the shaving and oil smell goes.

    Cheers, Tony.

Dont use synthetic oil in the diff, absolute waste of money . That amount of hair is about 50k's worth I'd have thought.

Use the reccomended 85w90 mineral gear oil. checking it in 10k is a good idea.

extra wear on spiders from turning is negligible, however Traction control really hammers the spiders
