Sorry for inaccurate English grammar - damned iPhone auto correct!!
Hi, so against better judgement, I bought a 2001 disco 2 td5 auto through eBay. I'm in Newcastle, NSW - disco is in Melbourne. Seller assures me it is his baby, carefully looked after, serviced every 5 k's, selling only due to health reasons.
So wife and I fly down on Saturday morning, meet up with seller and go over car. In hindsight now, I realise the first thing he tells me is that the bleed valve on top radiator hose must be undone when topping rad up. A screwdriver was convieniently left in drivers door pocket! He's obviously needed to do this regularly! However, he seemed genuinely sad to see her sold.
So we get 150 Km's out of Melbourne and she starts to over heat! We pull over, notice coolant leaking from reservoir cap, so allow to cool down and top up with coolant. Get another 300 Km's, having turned a/c off only to repeat it's overheating and loss of power, whilst overtaking a truck. I dare not go any further, so reluctantly join NRMA and get towed to Yass.
The local mechanic says he tested rad and head gasket has blown and jack of oil in engine gas caused it to blow a lot of smoke. It's now stuck there, with no hope of any work being done mid January!
We managed to get a lift back to Newcastle, but in faced with a potential huge repair bill fit a car stuck 500kms awAy from home!
I would really like to get it back to Newie, but it's gonna cost a lot to get it towed that far - any suggestions guys on what's happened? I think the seller knew it was not 100%, but could he have foreseen a head gasket would blow soon?
What other damage could I have done? Any suggestions on best place to get it fixed? Is this too big a job for a local country mechanic? Anyone any good ideas for recovery to Newcastle? Appreciate any help or suggestions!
Cheers, chris

I am guessing it was on eBay for a reason. Its very bad luck. If you didn't pay to much it may be worth fixing. Otherwise you may have to cut your losses.
Call these guys. They might be able to get it home for you.

Hope you can fix it. I would also to the oil cooler when you do the head gasket. My opinion is that it goes first and then the head gasket goes once it gets a bit hot. You may have a cracked head. Not much good news here. Sorry
The engine most likely still has the original plastic locating dowels for the head and the head has walked over time - its a common problem. Depending on how hot the head got it may or may not still be OK. Get the head tested for flatness and hardness and if OK then refit it with steel dowels. Standard LR steel dowels from later model engines may or may be able to be used depending on the particular version of the head but many very early model heads have been fitted with steel dowels of some sort. There are lot of threads on here.

I don't wish to be mean, but......
Your judgement was sound to look for a LR, but surely the alarm bells were ringing when he spun the story about filling the radiator. Especially when you had to drive back to Newcastle.
How did you pay for the car? If through Paypal, you maybe able to get your money back if the item was not as advertised. It almost certainly had a known head gasket problem prior to purchase.
Obviously the seller is one of those wonderful people who don't give two hoots for others. I hope he has trouble sleeping at night, but I doubt that will be the case. Either way, I would ask for my money back. I don't think you'll get it, but at least he will know that you know what has happened here.
I hope you can sort it out without taking too much of a hit on the hip pocket.

Maybe, but on the other hand he might be a very genuine person who for several months has not driven further than the local shops.
Just because an engine overheats after 150km of highway speed does not mean that there were symptoms when driving around town that would suggest to someone with very little mechanical knowledge that there was a serious problem.
Have TV programs like ACA and 60 Minutes convinced everyone that our first assumption should always be that everyone else is a crook who is out to rip us off?
The seller might be a very good actor and a crook, but why would that be your first assumption?

Good. He'll have no problem getting his money back then, will he?

I have no idea whether he will find it easy to get his money back.
That wasn't my point.
I wasn't giving the seller a character reference.
In fact, I said:
I was just commenting on how common it seems to be for people to see the worst in others. I think ACA etc encourage that attitude. The seller might be a very good actor and a crook, but why would that be your first assumption?
