Whirring Noise - Stops When Braking

    Hi all,

Just started hearing a "whirring" noise while driving from the rear of the car. It's fairly constant and does stop when I apply the brakes.

Looking at the rotors and pads they look well worn compared to the front, so hoping this is the cause. Seems like it's going to take a week to get any parts in so I can change them. Might give Jag Spares a call in Victoria as they always seem quick to deliver anything I need.

Could there be any other cause, and do you think the car would be okay to drive? Have a family do tomorrow up in Brisbane which is a 500km odd round trip.

    It's a 2000 V8 Discovery.

    Thanks,
    Antony.

If your disc rotors are sufficiently worn the pads may be thin enough so that the steel pad backing is touching the raised edges of the worn area on the discs. It will probably be OK so long as you're absolutely sure the brake pads still have sufficient lining on both pads of each wheel.

Thanks for responding. They're definitely not as bad as that, but you can see and feel that they are countersunk from the brake pads whereas the front discs are level. As long as they won't lock up and send us crashing in a ball of flames hopefully they should be okay for the drive.
