I would certainly be putting some sealant on the gasket and surfaces, just ensure it is suitable for super high temperature. and torque the bolts to the correct specification as this will include expansion due to heat.
Last time I had the "whistling" exhaust manifold I had it done by a local mechanic, 2 years later and it is now "whistling" again, I have noticed that a stud seems broken, and so have ordered new studs, gaskets etc.
I can see that the previous job had liberal amounts of red and blue sealant applied between the face of the block and the gasket, and between the gasket and the manifold, is this what I should be doing as well?
Cheers

I don't think that it should need any sealants on the gasket.
It's likely that your manifold is warped, which would break the stud too. New manifold time or if yours hasn't been done previously you can get the front mating face done at a machine shop.
There is a UK company that sells heavy duty larger studs for the TD5 if you wanted to go that way.
I installed 10mm studs 5 years ago, and used this Gasket Makers : Permatex® Ultra Copper® Maximum Temperature RTV Silicone Gasket Maker on the gaskets, have had no problems with stud breakage or leaks since. Bought the studs and nuts from the local bolt place. Bear in mind that a 10mm stud will mean you have to enlarge the holes in the manifold and the gasket. It is a laborious job especially if done partly by hand...![]()
