Thread: What spares do you keep in the shed?

Great thread... so it's got me thinking... with the various lists showing up, there's a real difference between a well stocked spares cupboard and an empty one, of which I'd say mine is.

I'm only just now slowly building up the tool chest and my knowledge of mechanical things. Having engaged the CDL and Low Range for the first serious and pulse elevating dirt track climb yesterday, I'm so glad I persevered with the D2 and its woes.

So, what's a good starting point with spares, I see the serpentine belt and fuses, so will look at those, light bulbs too.

My two main questions are:

1. What items make a good base for spares.

2. Where do people order/purchase their items.

Of interest are the serviceable items, such as the filter kits etc for oil changes. I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to ordering these things as I have no real knowledge or experience with where to go.

I have a box with some old hoses and belts which have been replaced and some other odd bits. Also have the rear diff that was replaced by the auto locker. Got a collection of spare wheels and tyres too. Before a long trip I usually replace the various filters and, if the old ones aren't too bad, throw them in a box just in case. In the Disco is a Pelican box with some spares, including fuses and bulbs, and tools. I'm not a mechanic, but having an old serpentine belt in the box when travelling saved my bacon when the belt shredded on the side of the road south of Ballina late one night last year.
But I guess the issue is how many spares do we really need? Its a balancing act. My BIL the mechanic has been known to go travelling with half his workshop in the back, which is nice if something is needed, but adds a lot of weight to the vehicle. Mind you, they go scouring in antique shops and usually come home with a collection of stuff! When does prudent foresight turn into kleptomania?

I don't keep my spare/breakdown parts in the shed, they are in the Disco.
It's hard to fit parts from the shed when your 500KM+ from them

I figure I only have to limp out till I get to a spot that parts can come to me.
In my rig parts include....
-A spare serpentine belt, adjuster assey. and idler puller.
(my experience has been a bearing seizes and burns the belt out).
-Spare fuel filter and some bolts with the old "O" rings to blank off the water sensor hole.
-Some of the self adhering tape for coolant hoses etc..
-5ltr engine oil.
-List of phone numbers of suppliers who can ship via post to me any larger parts I need.

I should add I tend not to throw away any old part out when doing maintenance.
The best used parts are then the above breakdown kit.
I try to keep a set of oil filters and an air filter at home.
Everything else is only a working day away if ordered early for me.

Who said they are all in the shed

On my last trip - for vehicle repair - I took:

Self amalgamating tape x1 roll
100mph tape x1 roll
Cable ties x200 (pkt)
Shifter, spanners (metric)

G'day Steve, I tried to have a couple of days off, but Heather had to read emails, a few were in trouble so we ended up helping man kind after all it is the season of giving. When I pass from this world I hope the few brownies we did will at least get our feet into the door.

Hi Mario. Well done with the great service over the holiday period, great to hear! I can relate to Heather having to read emails.... It took me a week this break to stop looking at my work ones
