    discovery 2 springs, shocks

hi after input for the best riding package for a discovery 2, Ive moved for work and now drive the car 300klm extra at each end of the week and am finding the ride a little stiff for the long haul in 1 hit the car is currently riding on standard springs and shocks so a small lift wouldn't worry i'm just after a softer more compliant ride if possible as this is the only down side to keeping it for the trip.chris

Std springs and working shocks give the softest ride.

If you're finding it too harsh aftermarket won't help you!

I think that the standard springs and shocks, although complient can sit a bit close to the bumpstops. This is especially as they age and settle and if you have a bar on the front. Because they keep hitting the bumpstops the ride can be harsher. I thought that when I lifted my Disco tht even though the springs were stiffer the ride was softer. What makes a big difference to the ride comfort, more so than the springs is the shocks, so make sure you choose a comfort spec shock rather than a HD or performance shock.

Dobison springs and shocks or king springs and pedders foam cells.

    Pedders... Not on your life!!!!

And whilst foam shocks will be a bit softer than a gas shock, they also fade quicker, only to never return to their previous condition...

    Avoid!!!

I would also side step anything Pedders and especially anything foam cell.

The softest lift springs I know of are OME fronts at 180lb/in, I'm not sure if they still have their 160lb springs or what the actual lift from new is. King also had 190lb with 40mm lift.

Rear King lifted were definately lighter than OME, IIRC they were somewhere between 240-270lb/in. These are the softest that I know of. 30mm lift. OME have a 290lb lift and I'm unsure of the actual lift from new.

Fro shocks.....well, whos tested them and is there ever any data on anything but Bilstein. PErsonally I like Bilstein but these are a performace shock. OME do have what I think is a well specd shock to maximise the gains available for a Disco2, these come in performance or comfort. Others think that there are better alternatives.

Smile Discovery 2 Springs , Shocks

My advise is to weigh your vehicle front and back axles, This will give you the weights of all the addons such as bullbar, winch, dual batteries rear drawers, fridge slide , etc. Then ring or email dobinsons and they will suplly springs to suit your weights. Shockers ,I use Bilstein every time for long life. Source from USA Much Cheaper like 50% than AUS.

I just fitted a pair of RRC "green" springs to the front of mine which are AFAIR 160Lb per inch or just about identical to stock but about 30MM higher. This has improved the ride greatly as it no longer bottoms at every speed bump.

LRA sell an identical spring to the "green" ( with wait for it a green stripe)but said to me that I may need a "pink" if I have a bullbar.

I have Kings KRR 04 in the back which give 40-50MM lift but are progressive and about the same as stock as the wire is 17.3 MM vs 17MM stock with the same number of coils.
I have non performance Monroe "twin disc" shocks which IMHO have excellent valving.
A Disco 2 will never be as comfortable as a RRC as the rear springs are much heavier as the car is expected to be used for carrying loads, and loaded the ride is excellent, but empty it is rough. A D2 also has enormous anti roll bars because the Germans think we all want to corner like in BMWs and these add significant side to side "head toss" on rough roads.

In addition , if you have 18 inch wheels these add a lot of "sharp edge " harshness, and a change to 16 inch wheels with high profile tyres eg 245.75x16 will also improive the ride.

Unless you will never carry a load, you are a bit stuck with the hard rear springs, but if you decide that you will never carry a load, talk to LRA as they will have a RRC spring designed for an RRC with load leveller that will be say 180-200lbs per inch and give a smoother ride.

thanks guys have already gone the bigger wheel option mainly for off road options, (tread pattern wise) I would like to convert to air suspension from a p38 but know that it would create as many problems as benefits (I do have a complete p38 for the parts). easier to make disco more compliant for the short term as I see it being replaced with a later model rangie in the future
