			Confused about d2 diffs...

Up till yesterday I thought that d2 diffs had the same centre and carrier (3rd member) as the p38s.
As it turns out, a 4 pinion p38 centre will not fit in a 99 d2 carrier. Which would be a nice upgrade over a 2 pinion centre.
Looking at photos on ebay it seems that the d2 have 24 spline d1/RRC diffs. Although they're supposed to be stronger somehow.
But on ebay.uk there's a few listings for a p38/d2 diff -
If someone could shed some light on this it'd be great, as my brother is without a vehicle atm.
If the d2 centre is the same as a d1, would the planetary and sun gears out of a d1 do for suitable replacements?

					Benji
I have just had the centres out of my D2a.
They appear to have a thicker cross pin but the main difference is that the cross pin has a roll pin holding it in place instead of circlips that D1s and Range Rover Classics use. This prevents the cross pin from rotating and hence stops the cast from wearing away. The early diffs would wear one side away then when shock loaded only one side gear would take the load and would explode, then the load would transfer to the other and break that one.
My D2 diffs at 190k had no wear in the pin to casting area.
So No, not the same as a D1. Not sure if a D1 centre would fit. Side bearings were the same.
Cheers
Chuck

A complete D2 centre can be bolted into the front of any Defender, either end of a Defender 90 and either end of a D1 or RRC (Running 24 spline drivetrain) (with the relevant drive flange change if needed)
As such a 24 spline rover centre from any of the above could be fitted in a D2 (with the relevant drive flange change if needed)
P38's are different.
I don't know for certain if the planetary gears could be changed from a d1 centre to a d2 centre.
Post 2010ish 110 and 130's apparently have a 4pin front rover type diff, which may be usable
