    oil leak time

    Hey everyone!

have recently noticed that my D2 TD5 is leaking a lot more than the usual drop here and there. after an initial observation the leak seems to be coming from around one of the bolts at the front of the bell housing (see attached photos) I have flicked through and searched the forum and found a few common problems where it might be coming from higher up, although i cant seem to find an oil line unless it is leaking down and along the seal itself. My first question is: are those bolts that attach the bell housing at the front prone to loosening/need to be tightened? the seal itself seems to be in fairly good condition, although this may be a more 'optimistic' observation in the hope of not needing to replace the rear engine seal!

thanks once again for your help, and please let me know if this problem solving process should be approached from a different avenue

    baz

Have you had a look at the fuel pressure reg and the rocker gasket?

    I know that leak well

It will be coming from the rocker gasket or possibly rear cam seal.
The oil tracks down the edge of the bell housing and forms drips on the bolt heads.

Thanks for the info! just got the rear acoustic cover off the back of the engine and the foam is full of oil (see picture attached). offtrack is that where it is most likely leaking down from? i cant see an oil line on the bell housing/bottom of the engine but it might be running right along the edge of the bell housing and i cant see it till it gets to the bottom?

    cheers

It's most likely that is one of the spots it's leaking from.

The best way to find out exactly where they are coming from is to give the engine a wash and then drive it for a few days. Lying on your back under the car with a torch is another good way to see what is happening.

And leave the cover off. It's an unnecessary fire hazard.

have you looked at the turbocharger oil return line. if it's leaking , it seems to get everywhere....appears to blown by the fan anywhere around the rear of the engine and even mists on your spare and rear window.

simple job to repair...little bit fiddly....$4.00 part.

Mine's leaking there - I just assumed I didn't tighten it up enough. What's the part? A gasket?

yep, its a small pressed metal gasket. much to my surprise , I didn't have one when I removed the pipe.

I had to remove my turbo-intercooler hose to enable access ....you just can't get both hands in there.

and.....I forgot to refit the hose.....as I've said in another post....I had a turbo charged leaf blower and no engine power.

if you are clever you could change it in a half hour.

No I havent checked there yet but I will definitely have a look! Seems like the oil leak has been reduced, it only has a drop around the size of a 10c piece now (I mean it is a land rover after all) so I'll see if I can find a small leak/weep around the other areas!
