    Whistle Under Acceleration?

    Hi,

Getting round to selling my Disco 2 when all was well. However, just over the last couple of days there is an audible whistling noise coming when under acceleration. Sounds like it's from the front but I could be wrong. What could be the possible causes?

It doesn't do it any other time other than when accelerating, and turning left or right or the type of gradient doesn't seem to make any difference. Engine sounds good when I checked it in the drive in park/neutral.

    Thanks,
    Antony.

Turbo whistle most likely. Mine does the same thing. No idea why you have not noticed it before.

I split a turbo air hose, first elbow out of the turbo and the whistle was louder till fixed.

Does it sound like a slipping fan belt at all? Comes in under acceleration, maybe around 2000 or 2500 RPM?

Check posts here for exhaust gasket leaking - they sound just like a belt squeal...

    Thanks for the responses.

I should have said it is a V8 so no turbo. Also just had the exhaust gaskets replaced and sure the issue isn't there. Might be more of a metallic whistle, perhaps something to do with the U joints? Someone also said could be the transmission?

Ahh - Ignore my post then - only relevant to a Diesel TD5 I reckon.

Check fluids in gearbox and transfer case.

One of dads ran dry, and sounded like a turbo whistle............ 'till all the cogs ground smooth.

Damn, will have a look. With the V8 you have to do it by getting under the car and checking the fill level?

Have the transmission filter kit waiting and haven't paid the $300 odd to have it replaced with new fluid so serves me right!

    check the vac hoses,

Do this with the engine idling and a can of areostart (start ya bastard is the same thing) spray it around all the vac hoses, when the revs change you found the leak.

check all the bearings on the belt pullies too.

    U joint?

The whistle seems to have gone away although today along with a new set of rear discs and pads, I had the auto transmission serviced. There is now a "clunking" noise when shifting Reverse to Drive etc. and the mechanic recons it's the U joints - this happened before the service.

Since I'm selling the car, please let me know the average cost to repair this? Is it just a case of replacing the u joints or do I need to have the prop shaft rebuilt? Also, the gear box seems fine and changes smoothly so no issues there, but is this something that can wait for the new buyer?
