    Question TD5 air conditioning compressor missing front plate on the pulley

    Took the Disco in today to have the aircon serviced as it stopped being cold. They diagnosed the issue as the air conditioning compressor missing front plate on the pulley:








    They tell me that there is two common causes:
    1. general wear and tear and rattling loose and falling off
    2. sudden extreme load on it causing it to sheer

    Is this correct? Is there advice correct that the entire unit needs to be replaced not repaired?


    They kindly provided a quote on a replacement - $1,295.00 + GST - it's supplied by a third party and they're quoting me at the trade price that they pay.

    However, Britcar < JPB101330 | AIRCON COMPRESSOR V8+TD5 NRR-DIS2-DEF | Britpart | Defender 1983 To 2006 | Britcar (UK) Ltd > have Denso units (which is the OEM brand) for GBP 324.26 (approximately AUD $605.75) + shipping costs (currently unknown).

    There is a seller on eBay selling a unit < Landrover Discovery II TD5 99 04 Diesel NEW AIR Conditioning Compressor CON A C | eBay > at $346.95 with free postage! However:

    **PLEASE NOTE COMPRESSOR IS SUPPLIED AS PICTURED AND DOES HAVE A DIFFERENT PLUG TO AUSSIE MODELS. THE INSTALLER WILL NEED TO FIT THE WIRING CONNECTOR FROM THE OLD COMPRESSOR, WHICH WILL INVOLVE IDENDIFYING THE POSITVE AND EARTH WIRES FROM THE OLD SYSTEM. IF ANY ASSISTANCE IS REQUIERED TO DO THIS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT US.

    the front pulley is an electromagnetic clutch and they can fail, rather than replave the whole unit why not search for "clutch". Nippon Denso Australia do these as a replacement part for most jap cars so if the unit is a denso then a good chance to get just a clutch.
    Assumes the rest of the pump is ok..............

    Have a look at Tech Chatter under "Aircon gurus - pls advise". I've just been undertaking similar studies with some success. The bit that is missing is the clutch armature, and you'll need a parts kit to go with it.

    Clutches are replaceable and for a damn sight less than what those highway men want! Being a Denso unit any air con shop will have them. Failing that if you want to go the new route changing plugs over is a doddle! The actual compressors for the V8 and TD5 are the same, mounting points and all . I think those 1s he is selling are for US discos. I saw a heap of them on EBay last year for 2-300 for V8s. Changing to a new means a regas of course whereas a clutch replacement should not.

    The clutch is two main plates, one of which is missing of course. A small bolt and a shim to maintain the running clearance when ac not energised are also missing. It looks like the bolt fell out and is not lodged in the shaft. I tried to source a new clutch from a nation wide automotive aircon supplier, the LR unit is unusual, different number of vees in the multi vee drive belt maybe. The compressor itself is generic enough, as is the bearing on the front.
    With the belt removed it is possible to extract the circlip retaining the bearing on the comoressor nose. The clutch and bearing pull of fairly easily. Beats an aircon service, regassing etc at over $300.
    The bearing can be had from auto ac suppliers, mine was OEX brand, "clutch bearing common Japanese clutch" part no CLX420 under $40 a few years ago, I seem to remember grinding or scraping back some staking in the clutch's backplate then pushing the shot bearing out. Refitting easy, freeze the bearing, warm the clutch and support the clutch backplate so it cant distort during pressing. Backyard shed job, pretty easy. Use oil filter pliers to hold the driven plate when refitting the bolt ( Loctite).
    Im sure TR Spares Adelaide or another wrecker closer to you can sell you the clutch plates, bolt and shim. Its come up on this forum before.

    You may be lucky enough to find the bits in the radiator shroud or splash guards.

    I agree, have a good look around, you may find it lodged somewhere. When my bolt fell out I lost the bolt but found the plate thrown up on top of the aircon compressor itself.

    At the moment, based on what what I have read, the shaft of the compressor can be damaged when the clutch seizes, so I am thinking of going with the complete new unit and regas to prevent further future issues - if I can get another 12 years out of it before it needs to be touched again that would be ideal!

    While you are working around that area, put an engine saver(low water sensor) in the top bleed screw.
