TD5 Head Gasket signs
Well, the old girl has gone almost 240,000km without doing a head gasket, as far as I can tell. It has been losing a little bit of coolant, but I found clear indications that the radiator has been leaking (now replaced) and a small leak coming from the region of the water pump (replaced < 2yrs ago
).
Other than that, never overheats, even towing loads in the NQ summer heat.
Had the bonnet up and refilling with coolant after replacing the radiator, and looked into the overflow tank, and noticed a slow but steady small bubble every second or two bubbling up to the surface of the coolant from the return tank (at idle), so I'm thinking that a head gasket will be on the list to be done sometime soon.
I'm assuming that there isn't anything else this could mean? I'm guessing that at that rate then it's not a must-fix-weekend sort of job, but can plan for it in the next few months. Thoughts?

head gasket signs
Could be an indication! can you hear any gurgling noises from behind the dash? This frequently points to coolant pressure build up from a leaking head gasket, also do the coolant hoses feel very stiff after a run?If you take the cap off the expansion tank does it overflow?
At those sort of Ks you are on borrowed time for a new head gasket.

Thanks Trev, no, no gurgling, and no other telltale signs, just the age of the engine and the small bubbles. Think I've been pretty lucky so far. I've had the D2 since 150kk, and the previous owner didn't do the head gasket either, so pretty certain it's an original.
I'm not looking forward to the job, so I was sort of hoping someone would tell me that bubbles in the overflow tank was just a normal thing for these engines

If you go ahead with the head gasket I would do the oil cooler as well. I am working with an Engeneering guy to custom make an oil cooler. I wonder if the oil cooler goes first and causes the head gasket to go.

I've just had the oil cooler off to try and sort out a coolant leak and yeah it's a bit of a funny colour, and the inside has started to corrode.
BTW, hoses aren't hard and pressure doesn't seem to build up much. Think I will still do the head gasket, but wait until I've got the time. I've got two weeks off at Easter, so might be then.
