Rear prop shaft bolts, Help/Solution needed.

    Really Bloody LR,

Every time I try and fix something I found something else is stuffed.

So took the front prop shaft out and had it checked. All was good so I cleaned it up, gave it a good grease and put it back.

Today, I though I might as well do the rear as well.

The front bolts, where the prop shaft bolts to the flange are exposed. They rely on the flange shaft being big enough that the head of the bolt cant spin so you only have to remove the nuts and the bolts stay in place. There is a simple circlip which holds the bolts out of the flange. In the front if the bolts should happen to spin then they are open and you can use a spanner.

In the rear however the bolt heads are not accessible because they are inside the hand brake drum. So if the corners should get very slightly rounded off, like mine are before my time, then the bolt spins and you cant get to the bolt head.

I have managed to get the nut off by forcing the bolt out with a pry bar and undoing the nut while the bolt is forced against the flange. Hope that makes sense, no damage done.

Now I thought I could then just replace the bolts. Well no good there because the bolts are too long and I'd have to remove the flange which means pulling it from the gearbox and that means replacing a seal that is not currently leaking.

I'm currently thinking of using a very small piece of wire maybe 3mm long and jamming it between the flange and the bolt so it cant turn. Problem is it will probably come out one day and then be rattling around in the hand brake drum. Then there's the problem of the next time I need to get it off.

    Bloody LR.

I've managed to get it back the same way I got it out. The bolts must have a bit of bite into the back of the flange.

I was considering welding it. I also considered increasing my insurance to enough to buy a Toyota then if it should catch fire while I was welding it. Welllllll.

Oh well. It's back together now. All greased and looking good for a while. With no fire.

    Happy days.
