No. If you're seeing oil under the car, more likely to be from the rear if the rocker cover gasket or the cam seal on rear of engine. Potentially also the Fuel pressure regulator.
Td5 rear main seal is this a common fault ?

The rear of the sump can also start to leak . The things mentioned above are common .the main seal is not .
could a rear main seal indicate other issues with the engine?
reason i ask is i have a depsoit down for d2 2001 and the car yard has rang to say they have put it through for a rwc check and say it needs a rear main done and its not the rocker cover but the rear main seal, along with a few other things and want to increase the price of the vechile by 1k to help cover the 2.5k of work quoted.
I call dodgy! They can't raise the price of a vehicle they are trying to sell because it needs work! IMHO of courseYou put a deposit on a car that they were selling with a rwc. Therefore it is their problem and they have to pay for it to get fixed. Just like if I was selling my own car and said I'd get a rwc and rego done. I would have to absorb the cost of both. Even if it meant 2.5k of work (which sounds silly too IMHO)
And yes if they say rear main they probably aren't too familiar with landies or it might be a one off. Alternatively as you state it might need other work done if the rear main is leaking anyway.
Check it yourself if you're handy or ask for help from an AULROian if possible. Otherwise back away slowly and quietly![]()
