I have diligently had my D2 Serviced every 6 months by a specialist. The last service in October 2013 it got a clean bill of health.
My dad who's a retired mechanic visited me last month and checked over my car which is still all good.
I have only done 2,400k's on 5w 40 Fully synthetic oil which is still clean, so im loathed to spend another $450 on a Service in March.
How long do people think I can stretch it out until the next service with this type of oil?. I wont evern do 2,400 in the next 6 months!. Its seldom used.
My safty chceck is in March anyway... any thought's ?

The D2 V8 engine is not state of the art technology, it's a basic push rod V8 , chain driven single cam shaft and little has changed it over many years. I don't believe it warrants spending big money on fully synthetic engine oil. Mineral based oil with regular changes including filter would suffice, and save you money. It is an easy DIY job, so if you spent $400 just on an oil change then that is dear.
Every 5,000 ks or six months with Valvoline oil plus filter < $45
If it is seldom used but well warmed up when driven, then oil changes could be stretched to perhaps 12 months.
If, however, you do only very short trips then 4 months would not be too often.
Semi synthetic such as 10-40 Magnatec is ideal for these older engines.

Oil obviously gets dirty with contaminants when it's used but it also has issues when it sits around and more so when partially used and sits. I've just started using Penrite 10/40 diesel oil in the V8 and it's higher in zinc and the other stuff which is reduced in newer petrol oils. I've previously used Penrite Semi Syn 10/40 petrol oil which was fine but in reading up there has been a few references to whats missing from new oils that older engines like (zinc etc) so that prompted the change to the diesel mix. I change every 5000k's, oil and filter and I also use a hydraulic filter (25micron Zinga brand, part no be-25-25 by memory) which is a direct fit and keeps things really clean.

I read somewhere that we can use engine oil in the 5 speed box & transfer case, so is there one oil that can be used for all three? (V8, G box & transfer box)

I highly recommend the Penrite Pink coolant. And the diff specialist (Craft Diffs Sydney) only uses LSD oil in all applications. Reasoning is that no one can fill the wrong oil for an application, in virtually all application the extra weight and additives make no difference to running performance. Works fine so far in the std front and Ashcroft ATB rear.
