So what does a 4HP22 sound like when on the way out?

    Hi all
As I say, what does a 4HP22 sound like when it's heading for the great auto trans graveyard in the sky?

I have to admit, I haven't yet had a good listen and crawl around while running, but I have a constant whirr/whine when running that rises and falls in pitch with engine speed.

It doesn't sound "mechanical" enough to be the T/C, the back to back seal & output seals were done in October/November last year so I don't think it's that.

Just wondered if the A/T starts making any noises like this before it goes to lunch. Larry's done 273k km and the PO had a 2nd hand one put in not long before I bought him at 160k km.

    Cheers
    Mike

It really will depend on what is going west on it.Mostly the auto itself will start displaying symptoms such as slow to engage drive at takeoff, erratic/rough/ jerky shifts , loss of drive momentarily at odd times that sort of thing. Noises are more associated with the transfercase gears/bearings etc . However it is possible the auto has something going in it . drop the oil and check it for glitter, no no not the gary type!
When mine went it was the fluid pump destroyed itself but it never made any noises per se, even though there was tons of metal in the oil, just loss of drive and shifting erratically .
    Cheers Scott

Thanks Scott, nothing I can really put my finger on but I was thinking pump/torque converter. From standing, when I put my foot down the noise becomes quite noticeable, too quickly I feel for mechanical gear noise, and is present during driving. In fact quite intrusive...
I'll have a good look around on the weekend. Would really like it to be something else, need to spend the cash on the County!!
    Cheers
