Sounds Like A Stone Stuck in the Tread

Hi all - I had a look about and couldnt see anything quickly but as you'd all know by now owning a disco means another day, another noise.

I've just replaced an almost shattered tensioner pulley to have another noise then pop up.

It sounds like I've got a stone or screw stuck in a tyre, but I can't as yet find either in the tyres.

So, is there anything known out there that could be going wrong in the drive train that would give off a sound similar? Comes on at about 50kph and above, drops off when you get below say 40....

Remote chance but if its a clicking sound check the diff breather tube hasn't detached from the firewall and is swinging around in the wheel arch. Happened to me and it sounded exactly like a shot cv joint over a certain speed and on applying lock. Just reattaching the tube was the simple fix

Cheers guys - I'll check both options. Put a new front drive shaft in 2 years ago, but it was a Brit Parts unit so its probably 11 months overdue for replacement. (12 month warranty + 1 month).

Hopefully I'll be re-attaching a hose and its all sorted!

Ok - so I got to have a look under the car today and no hose issues so I pulled the front drive shaft out and took it for a lap around the block and the "ticking" sound is still there.

Going to drop past a trans guy to see if he can find any clues - but open to thoughts here as well.

Altho' I have not experienced myself I have heard a ticking noise in another vehicle when the head started to go. Horrible thought but worth checking

Still ticking - but have had the trans serviced, replaced the oil in the transfer case, taken the rear shaft off and taken it for a FWD drive and still there.....

    Will keep on exploring.

Starting to think either CV's or something more sinister in the transfer case perhaps?

The ticking matches road speed rather than engine speed, so I'm thinking its an after trans problem.... It does need a service as well though, so I'll get them to check the heads then anyway.

    Hi,

Mine has the exact same symptom. I hear it when going around corners near large cement barriers to reflect the sound. Also at low speeds though in garage now.

Makes me think it is a diff problem or a shot wheel hub.

Mine has always had a feint tick from CV joints but now the new Tick is a rear end problem.

I might change the diff oil and see what falls out. Stuff has fallen out before so I'm not going to be surprised.

    Cheers

    Ian.

Diff's could be an option, although it does seem to be coming from the "middle" of the car. Probably the centre diff in the transfer case because it's never just easy....

It'll be a $2 part inside $3000 worth of labour.
