Stripped thread on sump plug

Changed the oil in the disco and when the sump nut came out it striped the thread being an aluminum sump I am thinking I can helli coil it and put in a new sump bolt has any one done this and how good did it work.

Have not done a sump plug, but did both threads in a Td5 centrifugal oil filter housing (also aluminium) and it worked a treat.
Make sure you don't drill the hole too big before you tap it for the Helicoil.
I suggest once you've done the job, that you put a couple of litres of some light oil into the engine and undo the sump plug to wash out any metal swarf that may get into the sump.

Do this BEFORE you start the engine (obviously).

Would be an ideal time to drop the sump and check the oil pump bolt, drill from the inside and thoroughly clean after the helicoil is inserted.

If you get and fit one of these < Drainplug M16 X 1.5 T10/37L - Standard Series - Drain Plugs - Oils & Additives > you'll never have the issue again (and have neater oil draining in the future).

I had the same problem and bought helicoil (not the brand) M16x1.5 but when I tried to the spare plug it is quite lose. Is M16x1.5 is the right size? Thanks.

Same issue with stripped sump plug thread on TD5. Don't know when it occurred as I was initially getting my vehicle serviced at a garage and decided to "in source" this.

Problem resolved today - Purchased a 17mm tap kit off ebay http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131766639494

Took the opportunity to replace oil pump bolt and fit a new gasket.

The sump and sump plug were marked to avoid a repeat of over tightening.

Used instructions from www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 "Famous" Oil Pump Bolt

Only variation was that torque sequence was marked on sump prior to fitting to make it easier.

I think that with care the hole could have been tapped without removing the sump, provided the tap was grease coated to pick aluminum cuttings and/or alternatively followed by adding old oil back to the engine with the sump plug loosely fitted, then quickly removing it to allow oil to escape thereby flushing any cutting. Make up your own mind up.

Fingers crossed that Im now back to the factory issued oil leaks
