    Leak source assitance.

So I just did a 1350km drive in the D2a from Rockhampton QLD to Bathurst NSW.
Since arriving I have found a few leaks, Fuel cooler is leaking on both ends and I think the fuel pressure reg is leaking.

But the one that has got me is there seems to be oil around the back of the handbrake assembly where the rear drive shaft attaches on. I have heard of oil leaking from the inside of the handbrake but i havent heard of any oil where I am seeing it. Any ideas?

Oil can leak along the splines & ends up leaking out of the flange.

IIRC, there's a felt washer fitted that's supposed to stop (slow down) the leak but you could also apply something like a weak Loctite to the splines.

Take the large metal vibration dampener off the transfer case between the handbrake and transfer case.

It has three bolts holding it in. My D2 had the top bolt leaking transfer case oil through the thread of the bolt. It leaked in a way that looked like it was coming from the handbrake.

Drain transfer case oil remove the bolt A bit of thread lock and tighten again.

Hope it is a simple as that .

If not it could be transfer case rear seal.. Not hard to change either.

    Good Luck Cheers...

I'll be interested if you find the cause.

I did a 800km run a couple days ago, got home and could smell ep oil, a look underneath showed oil on the handbrake drum, sprayed all along the chassis & spots on the rear bumper

Suspected the rear seal, already had one in the garage , took the handbrake drum off and bone dry inside

Carried on taking the complete handbrake drum off, the vibration damper off and gave it a good spray with degreaser. Checked the rear output housing bolts, all tight. Fitted everything back together. Went for a 60km drive got underneath and everything still bone dry.

Also checked the transferbox breather wasn't blocked.

I suspect it is going to be the seal/fiber washer. I was having a think last night and I suspect the reason I am only noticing it now is that I am parking my car in my friends front yard on a slant nose up. So the oil was probably sitting at the seals height and now with the angle it is sitting up against it. Parked the car on a level surface last night and when this crazy NSW temperature reaches something more sane Ill go out and check it.
