its my understanding that the bell housings are different and the V8 torque converter wont bolt up to the TD5 drive plate without major modification, you can buy a modified one from Ashcrofts or get yours modified to suit.
Hi all you Gurus of Land Rover.
I have been reading what I can re fitting an auto trans from a V8 to a TD5. There has been comment on control units etc but I don't quite follow it.
I understand the control units are different but if the TD5 unit is retained with it's vehicle and the V8 trans fitted is that is what is required?
Is the V8 TC better?
Does it fit in the TD5 bell housing, is the drive plate to TC bolt pattern the same?
What else might I have to change or do to make a success of the job?
Looking forward to any advice I might get.
Cheers
Mike

Any benefit with fitting a V8 auto ECU to a chipped Td5 or is the programming the same.

The auto boxes are identical, pre updates were the 4HP22EH. The 24 EH box was fitted to later models, particularly too handle the extra power/torque of the 4.6 motor.
The bell housings, torque convertors and Auto ECU are specific for V8 & TD5
Refer to RAVE for detail - it only specifies the 4HP22EH for 1990- 2003 Discovery's irrespective of whether they are petrol or diesel

Try as I might I have not been able to find a specification for the 4HP24 unit.
The upper limit for the 4HP22 unit is 380 Nm.
The RAVE reference is page 44-4. AUTOMATIC GEARBOX - ZF4HP22 - 24, which states in part;
'from the 03 model year, the ZF 4HP24 transmission unit is introduced for use with the 4.6 litre V8 engine. The transmission is required to accommodate the increased power output of the larger engine. The ZF 4HP22 transmission remains in use on vehicles with Td5 and 4.0 litre V8 engines.
Both transmission units are of similar construction, with the ZF 4 HP24 unit being 15mm longer than the 4HP22 unit to accommodate a larger fluid pump. The operation of both transmission units is the same"
It is interesting that with the 4.4 litre BMW V8 introduced in 2002 the automatic gearbox used was the 5 speed 5HP24EH
