    Td5 radiator shroud

    hi all,

just did the radiator removal and new one in just today, topped up with fluids no leaks all is well. bit of a pain to get the rad out, just wished the horns were placed somewhere else as they need to be removed to get at some bolts behind. left the fan on the vehicle and still managed to get the rad out, did undo the complete air cleaner assembly quite easy given its not bolted down.

my issue was the rad shroud down below is not held to the rad in any way. the top is secured by two screws either side but there is nothing holding it in place below. am i missing something or have others found this to be the case.

while there also replaced all hoses and thermostat. cheers

there is supposed to be 2 clips which secure the bottom of the rad shroud to the radiator..

I lost mine as well, we were away at the time so i removed the shroud, if you look at the bottom of the radiator you can see 2 slots where the clips go.
I drilled 2 small holes in the plastic shroud (just big enough for cable ties) at the bottom & used 2 cable ties through the shroud & rad slots, worked a treat, and i can't lose the cable ties!!

Check the bottom of your old radiator, you might have left the clips on...

Don't forget to check the length of the 2 shroud screws into the radiator for clearance.
There have a been few cases posted where the screws pierced the side tanks of a new radiator.
I ground mine down and fitted washers as they were 2mm to long when checked.
    Cheers, Kyle

I've had my radiator out a couple of times: the shroud just slots into a groove along the bottom of the radiator and is held in place by the two screws at the top (one on either side).

I'm impressed you managed to leave the fan on but it must have been painful. For the $40 you pay for the spanner/tool and the 1 minute it takes to remove you'll find working on the front of the engine almost a joy - everything becomes much easier - serpentine belt and tensioner especially.
    cheers, bidds

I have previously done it with the fan, battery and air filter box in place. I removed them this time. Overall I think it was much much quicker with them removed (including the time to remove and refit them) and far less frustrating. Sometimes cutting corners is more trouble than it's worth!

Any idea what the dimensions of these two screws are meant to be? I misplaced mine last time I had the engine in bits

    thx

Agree the job was made much easier with particularly the air box removed. as for the fan, I do have two special tools bought from the UK for $100 to remove the fan but decided against it as i was pushed for time.

my battery box has been cut up and i don't leave the top cover on so did not need to move that. i did find the two clips on the bottom of the old radiator so will sort out soon. hopefully the rad does not need to come out to fit the two bottom clips.

i also now have two spare old used rad for the Td5. not sure whether they are useful to keep or not. i will reduce the size/length of the two top securing screws even though they are in and working fine. still don't understand why you would screw into the rad for the shroud cover, surely there would be a better way on such a critical item (cooling). seems poor design to me. anyway glad that's one less item to worry about now.

No idea of the size, sorry.
For a guess around 3mm x shorter than the hole in the radiator

    pic attached

here is a pic of two side by side Td5 rads. one with the rad cowl lower supports - two black plastic bits and one without. note the rubber at the bottom of rad to locate into the chassis has been removed. when fitting rad these two clips will not be provided with the new rad, also the black rubber strip to the right as well.

near impossible to fit these once rad installed so make sure you fit onto rad before installing into vehicle.
