If your piping is still in good condition just go to an exhaust shop and they should be able to cut it out and replace with a universal muffler.

Most want to make it louder. I don't. I want nice and quiet. I find it is starting to drone a little. Exhaust is now 11 years old after all and has had 230k with of yuck gas go through it.
Anyone replaced their muffler on their Td5 with the objective to keep it quiet and what did you replace it with. I haven't yet priced a genuine unit.
Additional question - what are they packed with standard? SS? Fibreglass?

While searching through the forum for performance tips, I've found that replacing a Td5 muffler seems to be a popular way to reduce back-pressure and thereby improve the performance of the turbo and hence the whole shooting-match. Have a search yourself and you may choose to delete your cat too - and look out for a particularly free-flowing muffler.
If you want to quieten it I would suggest replacing with a standard TD5 muffler, Cant get any quieter than stock! about 15% noise is exhaust, the rest is road and actual diesel rattle! Regarding your Q about construction, A diesel muffler is generally just baffled, little to no padding is used.

OK, my cat and original muffler are now gone.
The muffler was replaced by a 2.5" 'straight through' job by my local shop, which is about the same external dimension as the old one, but has no internal baffles at all.
2.5" is just big enough to allow the 60mm standard pipe to slide inside, before being welded shut, which I think should make it stronger than a simple butt-weld.
How does it go? Well, there is certainly no down-side. It is every bit as quiet as before, with no noticeable droning or extra noise at all. It sounds completely standard, both inside and out.
The performance seems no different at all at low revs and small throttle openings - a bit better at medium revs and definitely picks up a lot quicker when I put the boot in.
Everything else on the car is still completely standard, except I have finally fitted my egt probe and digital display.

The mufflers are completely hollow except for a couple of baffles.
I got a secondhand one cheap, cut it up and made it into a straight through pipe(it all cost about $60 to complete instead of the $180 that most places are asking for).
It was a little dronish in the cabin initially at certain rev ranges. I would estimate that 90% of the droning sound disappeared when I put a solid steel rear bumper on the vehicle.
All has been good ever since.
