    Turbo Heat Shield

I recently changed the small coolant hose hidden behind the turbo heat shield.

Whilst ordering the hose I was talking to my supplier who does know a bit about Landies. He suggested to leave the turbo heat shield off. I have done this without any problems so far, but it is winter so obviously there would be a lot less heat than in summer.

Anyone got any thoughts on this? Anyone removed theirs?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

    Hi Dave,

Got a second battery close by?

Radiant Heat - it cooks everything so having a cover or 'heat shield' around the manifold/turbo will reduce amount of radiant heat damage to components IE: battery, hoses, a/c compressor etc...

In fact, I recommend wrapping the manifold/turbo in a fibre-glass cloth and securing it with stainless steal wire/ties. It will dramatically reduce under-bonnet temps.
I can open the bonnet immediately after going for a decent run and place my hand directly on manifold/turbo for a few seconds without burning myself. Try that with-out fibre-glass wrapping! (okay, don't!)

Turbo chargers work their best with the HOT exhaust gases so wrapping won't do any damage. Large diesel engines (earth-moving and large stationary engines) generally all have the exhaust manifolds insulated.
Plus I think with the TD5 having the manifold slowly cool down can only be a good thing....

Oh....I just remember! To wrap your manifold you will first have to 'de-web' it as I did. No chance of doing it otherwise.

I will take a photo and post to show what I did...

    All the best!

    so...here is what I've done.

I removed my ex. manifold for preventative measures. I had no broken studs or any evidence of leakage but as I'm about to embark on an 'all Aussie adventure' I decided to reduce the likelihood of broken studs etc considering the history with the TD5...

I was shocked to discover approximately 3mm bend or warp along the manifold face !! Thankfully I had access to a local head-facing machine of which it took me considerable time to machine out....

I then elected to drill stud holes out to 10mm, from memory, and went about replacing all studs - no problems!

I then carefully slotted and chiselled out the webbing between ports and gently ground it smooth to reduce the chance of it cracking.

After installing manifold, torqueing nuts etc, I spent considerable time to wrap the manifold/turbo with a fibreglass insulation tape. I secured the ends with stainless steel cable ties and I've gotta say I'm happy with the end result.

Have a look at the attachments.

PS: ebay is one place you can obtain the tape. Look here as an example: 10M Fiberglass Exhaust Header Turbo Pipe Wrap Insulation High Heat Tape | eBay

    All the best, Jayden

Yes dave, I would 2nd the opinion to keep the shield in place, although it can be a pain in the rear when you want to do stuff around it! I think the benefit outweighs the downs.

Put the heat shield back on. It's there for a reason.

So are EGR valves and we all turf them. Engine cover, who still has them on?

The only reason I can see for the heat shield is for protection of the noise insulation under the bonnet. It is not going to have any effect on a fire wall mounted Aux battery as the shield is open at that end.

I like Disco 2 Driver's idea of wrapping the manifold in heat tape.

Far from it. I am purely looking for options and opinions. I am yet to decide which way to go, but I am actually leaning towards putting it back on.

I put a notch in my shield, I figured it was there for a reason
The top 2 bolts are easy, the one behind the turbo is a pita, I cut the bottom out of this hole, so the nut can be loosened and the shield slid out, easy as!
