I think OziExplorer has that info available on one of their pages. So a GPS could be the answer.
Where can I get a digital compass for my dashboard in my D2. Going down the Canning stock route next month?

A GPS is really the go now a days, Unless you are real old school .Not the normal road navigator 1s, though they tell you which direction you are heading. The dedicated mapping and routing such as the Garmin ETrex's, Colorado's and the magellan types all have actual compass's in them.

Your phone probably has a digital compass in it too...
Bryan.
iPhone certainly has a Compass...
There are plenty of apps to give you more info than you need...

I can recommend app GPS Essentials that, amongst a raft of features, has a compass (I have a window mounted Samsung Galaxy 3 which has built in gps). It can also give you UTM read outs, not just dms, which helps if you want to relate to a topo map.
Just run HEMA on the iPhone mounted on the windscreen with a suction mount. The 5 minute trend vector gives you a dirty great big arrow pointing the way you are going.
No, it won't work when stationary, but I'd suspect that a car compass wasn't much chop anyway with electrical interference etc. A quick glance at the shadows should give you a rough feel of which way is "up".
