    Cdl squeak

Firstly I'll start with a request to the mods to move this thread If this is not in the appropriate place.

We have chanced vehicle since joining/introduction post, our previous d2 came to an unfortunate ending and we now have a d2a. It has about 300000 Kim's on the clock.

Today I was testing the feature that disengages the TCS when the vehicle is started with the cdl engaged that it Believe the d2 has, I believe that the d2a does not do this but testing for this lead to me hearing a fairly loud squeaking from the cdl when engaged and bound up (I was driving on wet bitumen) I could not hear any squeaking when on grass/ dirt.

I am thinking that the cdl was engaged but not positively locking the front to rear prop shafts and the squeak that I could hear was slipping between the two drive shafts, I don't know if this is possible, perhaps could someone with the knowledge of the transfer case enlighten me. In the case that I am correct this means that the cdl is effectively doing nothing. Grrr.

The cdl engaged means that there is no slip between front and rear diff. Front and rear diffs are still open, with slip control via traction control. D2a has cdl locking, D2 does not. On wet bitumen the grip is still most probably too high. Squealing sound is most probably not good... I believe that engaging cdl also changes the traction control characteristics.

    Thanks bsperka,
My question relates to whether slip between the front and rear with the cdl engaged is a possible malfunction of a faulty/worn cdl. Do they wear? I am trying to decipher the exploded view of the assembly to figure out the mechanical functionality/operation.

I suppose that I could test if there is slip by getting the car crossed up, preferably lift a front wheel, put the handbrake on (locking rear prop shaft) remove TCS fuse and engage cdl, anyone have thoughts on this proposed test method?

As far as I know, the gears are either locked or free; there is no ability to slip. The centre gears in the diff are locked and 50/50 power front / back. I'll double check tonight in Rave.

When you engage the CDL is is 100% locked... that is why they call it a Centre Diff Lock.

You should ONLY use CDL in the appropriate circumstances or you run the potential risk of damaging the transfer case and centre diff through wind-up.

If for ANY reason you need to engage the CDL on hard surfaces (even wet bitumen) you should ONLY drive in a straight line for a short distance and then reverse back... this takes any wind up out of the system.

Unless your tires are "exactly" the same diameter front to rear (which they wont be) you will have wind up even driving in a straight line...

The squeak you heard may well be your Front drive shaft... I would be checking that ASAP..

It took me a while to comprehend the drawings but I think I understand the operation of the diff lock at the power transfer level, when engaged the front prop shaft is locked to the planetary gear housing (diff centre) via a dog clutch. This system should positively lock the front to rear is there any was that the dog clutch could be damaged?
As for the testing that I previously did i was driving <30kph with cdl engaged for < 40 meters, the sound certainly come on as the drivetrain bound up.
I'll get on to checking the front driveshaft, thanks Andy.

I think I got the same sound coming from mine. I just fitted a cdl link kit from davis performace. I'm now haveing trouble.

My low rang activation is now all stiff like its binding up in the tranfer case.

I'm going to remove the link tomorrow. And hopefully get rid of the sound.

So much from lock center this weekend away.

    Cause found

Yeah the cause of the sound is that two of the four bearings in the double cardon are... well not so good. I think it was on the way out, it's common but my test may have been the straw that broke the camels back, I'm sure that it it wouldn't have been too much longer anyway.

    Thanks for your help, Cheers

Better to have caught it now.. I know there are varying opinions about the AC drain but you may as well relocate / modify it while you are doing the front shaft... that way there is no question of it affecting anything...
