The ability to run on the spray hints at fuel.
I'm wondering if the rumble was the fuel running out.
My suggestion at this stage would be to unclip the fuel feed line at the regulator and check for flow.
Cheers Kyle.
As Alien said, it could be that you knocked the loom plug when you changed your rocker cover gasket. After idling for a while it may have worked loose.
BTW, I would not use start ya bastard or Aero start on a diesel.
These are designed to start petrol cars with much lower compression.
These products have been know to snap piston rings in diesels due to the way they "explode"and not "burn" like diesel.
cheers
Todd

I agree Todd. The amount used was very minimal, just enough to hear the increase in RPM. Desperate times called for desperate measures but all to no avail.
Don't be fooled by it running. That stuff can pre ignite in a diesel because of the high compression. Have seen it happen.
Hi Alien, that's exactly what I thought. I unscrewed the water level sensor underneath the fuel filter, had the pump running and then held my finger against that hole. Pressure was building up and when I pulled my finger away fuel was spraying everywhere. I did the same test on another Disco II (Identical car) and had exactly the same result. I thought maybe there is some internal fault with the new fuel filter, so, I replaced with the old fuel filter that was still laying around but had the same result. On my Hawkeye diagnostic tool I could see the fuel pressure registering.
Something is preventing the injectors opening up as the fuel is flowing and the engine is cranking.
You still have the rocker cover off? Check the cam is rotating.
If the cover is back on, remove the plastic plug out of the front of the head and watch while someone turns it over
I would check the chain tensioner. It may have failed thus throwing the timing out.
Sounds like an electrical gremlin, what is your immobilizer light doing in the center of the dash?

It sounds like you may still have air in the injectors. Persevere with the bleeding technique and it should start and be OK.
