    Radio Whistle

    Hi there,

Over the last few months I've noticed a feint whistle when the radio (FM) is on. It's only audible when listening to talk/news type shows, not music. Directly related to engine revs - is there a good starting place to fix this? I'm guessing it's an earth or something to do with the alternator and would like to get it sorted instead of dying on me out in the bush.

    cheers,

    bidds

    Bidds,

Sounds like you radio may be lacking decent reception, though normally this shows up as whistle on the AM bands rather than the FM bands.

Still, I'd be checking whether or not the aerial is earthing properly.
On my Defender I've inserted a small stainless steel screw into the aerial base so that it screws into the underlying aluminium fender, to make sure there's a good earth. Maybe you can do something similar in your Disco.

Or just remove the aerial and make sure the base of the antenna is contacting clean bare metal.
The issue is that most antennas need what's called a "ground plane" to work properly and the metal body of the vehicle provides that ground plane.
    Hope this helps.

Bidds, I have no info for you but a similar (radio reception) problem so hoping that a piggy back on your thread might help.
The answer by rurover ? might hold some clues but of course the aerial is set in the window a bit different to the Defender type.
My problem, rather than a whine is simply poor reception when away from the transmitters, if I try use the radio on with ignition off feature the reception is even worse.
So, ignition on the amplifier is getting power but reception is poor, ignition off the reception is so poor I think the amp is not getting power but two separate problems in the one system????????
Sorry to hijack (And never call out to Jack like that on a plane!) your thread but.....

    Ta
