D2a - CANT LOCK / UNLOCK - KEYS NOT RECOGNISED?

    2002 D2a TD5 - Auto

Following on from my other thread where I cleaned the earth points in the engine bay and then couldn’t start my D2a, we still have larger a problem.

    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...start-td5.html

We can now start the vehicle and drive normally, just cant lock it.

Wife took vehicle to our local and friendly specialist and with the three keys we have and the known bar codes. They were not able to get any keys to communicate with the vehicle, not even a new key.

I think this is all controlled by the BCU (Body Control Unit) but I am not 100% sure.

It seems that there is no power to the alarm system unit?
All the Key units have new batteries
Maybe there is power but it doesn’t know what to do with it?

The Alarm and immobiliser were turned off by the specialist

Wife told me last night that :-
The gear position indicator does not display the gear any more
The dash board light that shows the glow plugs are warming does not display any more. I don’t think this is related or not, its not very warm up here at the moment but she is fastidious like that and waits for it to go off before starting

I don’t drive the vehicle much, so haven’t seen any differences. I shall be using it a bit this weekend and see what if anything else is abnormal.

So, to conclude, does anybody have any suggestions as to what could be the cause and a solution for this?

Any suggestions welcome and we can try or investigate those.

    Thanks

The codes for the keys are stored in the BCU, you can read and change these in the BCU with a Nanocom. (up to 4 can be stored)
The key code is printed on a sticker on the back of the key fob circuit card
A Nanocom will also tell you if a key signal is being received from a key even if it is not registered.

    Two possible failures -
The BCU has "lost" the key codes.
The Remote receiver which is mounted up in the roof near the center interior light has failed.

    Hi

That's what happened to me, the receiver failed without warning.

Quick and easy job but hunt around for the best price. Same unit as in the Rover 75 , just need to check the frequency.

    Cheers, Jerry

    Thank you for your replies

Question though, if the receiver fails, why would that cause the gear indicator (on the LCD with the odometer) to stop showing the gear selected?

Could be two completely separate issues happened at the same time. It does happen.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

with regards to the gear indicator no displaying, yes, could be separate issue and coincidence but I am thinking that it is some kind of indication.
The red light isn't flashing and so its an alternate indicator that the received has failed

    any thoughts on that?

Mine showed similar problems a while ago. Ended up Just trying the "Master reset" option. Disconnect battery completely then hold foot on brake pedal for 10 seconds to make sure any residual power is drained. Then try connecting up again and see how you go. Worked for me but never did find out what had caused the issues.

My red light ceased working when the receiver failed. The only way I could get the car to work was by using EKA.

As stated try the re set option first.

I just undid both battery cables and then pressed the brake pedal for 20 seconds. I then made sure both the positive and negative battery cables touched each other well.

Then I reconnected and did an engine start. That worked fine.
Then I shut it down and locked him - it worked!

I then repeated and it worked again.

    Seems normal now.
might go for a drive later and see what the Amigos are up to.

Thank you for your help and assistance
