How far can you drive on bumpstops?

Long story short, Smokey has been dropping but always pumps back up. Not today......despite numerous attempts and jacking up so as not so hard. Car is at Sunnybank and at some point will need to get back to coast. As Monday is a public holiday...was considering driving home and then getting it fixed on Tuesday. Thanks in advance for any tips

    Regards

    Stevo

    Question Bump stops

Hi Stevo, that sounds like 100 kms drive. Sounds too far to drive home on the bump stops unless you had all day to do it, sloooowllyy.

Why not drive it to acacia ridge and get it fixed at SBL automotive Mc Cotter street acacia ridge (about 10 km I think) or something like that.

    good luck

I can't imagine there's a limit to how far you could drive it, but it'd be going very very slow as no suspension in the rear, so you probably wouldn't want to drive very far like that...

Sadly it probably just got expensive for you - the dropping was likely caused by leaking air bag or line. Leaving it unrepaired required the air compressor to work hard to maintain the pressure which has likely now caused the aircompressor to due from the stress, hence why it no longer pumps back up and meaning a much more expensive repair now...

If the leak is in the air lines and not the bags. Get a couple of pipes like these.

Thumbs up D-2 Air suspension has good points I'm sure

Air suspension seems to have it's problems, but I'm thinking it must be a pleasure when it's working well. Why is it so troublesome? the air bags are reliable enough I think they've around for a long time. But they don't last forever, Do you plan to change them every ten years or something? ( are they very expensive?)

The connecting pipes should be OK if they inspected for leaks once in while while with soapy water . The control system is that the problem?. I think a limp home connection with a normal tyre air compressor might be helpfull.

I had two cars with rear after market air bag boosters and loved them, they went for 10 years no problems, they had a little pressure gauge you could see at the back of the car. I had great comfort, but still had load carrying capacity when I needed it.

The reason I ask is I like D-2s, especially the last ones with the better looking front, and considering buying one. So I'm trying to get a better understanding of the issues with the air suspension, and does some one have good things to say about the air suspension? Or maybe modification s or maintenance they did that makes the air suspension reliable? Thanks

Thanks for the replies have decided a flat bed will be the go. Dont want to drive it down the M1 ( ie 110km speed limit).

Simmo....overall Ive never had real probs with my airbags. I think more a case of just one of those things that happen. Im sure my smile will come back when Smokey is up and level again

Anything that is rubber is going to perish over time. I have had to replace one of my airbags recently so far on my Sep 2002 built vehicle. The replacement cost around $250.00 locally and I had the car back up and running within two hours. So for 12 years and 210,000km I think that's a reliable system. I expect that the other side will fail on me at some point.

It's a brilliant system when running. Can load the vehicle up as much as you want and it's still at the right height. Can have lower when on the tarmac and higher when off road.

Have you checked the SLS relay under the bonnet?
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

Update....got back fo Smokey this arvo after 2 days. Being a positive chap bar the missus saying I had a hope in hell and before I called the flat bed, I gave it a crack.

I got the jack and lifted it up off the bumpstops to give it a head start. Turned the key and voila. Up she went. No messing about, jumped in and drove the 80kms homes with no probs. No doubt will drop again so will book in to get sorted. I think the weight of all the kids and luggage broke the camels back with the already disfunctioning airbag.

So fingers crossed no slumping overnight so I can get Smokey to my mechanics to fix.

    Regards Stevo
