    Thermostat Issue?

    Hi Folks,

    My TD5........

Not long ago I whinged that it leaked from every where, oil not coolant, so this last week it had all major gaskets changed engine and gear box.

Yesterday we did 500klms and all went swimmingly well, today 40klms and I noticed after about 20 the temp needle dropped slightly and a small whiff of coolant in the cabin.

Needle when back to its halfway point quickly and all okay until almost at the end of the journey when it did the same thing.

No apparent loss of fluid and cant smell anything under the bonnet, but there must be a leak as Im sure I smell something inside.

Any ideas what could be causing the temp gauge to move? My thoughts are the thermostat, that's a wild guess!

    (It doesnt leak oil anymore)

    Cheers, Jerry

    Jerry.
If you have access to a Nanocom I'd be checking temps against the gauge. Could be a faulty sensor, gauge or as you suggested, thermostat.

    Radiator specialist

Just had a heap of trouble with my TD5 Disco, overheating when towing.
Took it to a radiator specialist (after I had replaced the radiator), he shone his magic temp gauge at the radiator, it was cold despite the engine being at 'normal' temp, he suggested (and was correct) thermostat.
    Replaced it, no more problems.

    Whee

Thanks Robbo, I have Hawkeye. Why didn't I think of that?!

Mike, I have a new genuine 82c thermostat sitting on the shelf, it was for the V8 but can it be used in the TD5? Unit is identical, just opens earlier.

Going to change the cap and temp sensor as a matter of coarse.

Jerry , When you get erratic temp readings like that suddenly it is most likely the thermostat . A V8 thermostat can be used , It has the lighter spring ? I think. When I got all new hoses to replace mine, BOR said dont leave the old 1 in , replace it too. ( Reminds me, must do that job, nice shiny new hoses not working sitting on shelf! )

I was wrong :/ soft spring is for the K4 freelanders, but are used in TD5 by people looking to lower temps. Both V8 and TD5 are "hard" spring. Info in this post http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...today-82c.html

As per my earlier thread. My car sits at 82 cruising at 100 kmh towing my camper at temps up to 30 c. At 34c it sits on 85. I haven't seen over 90c even up 5 lands lookout it Wyndham in 32c.
So just get the normal part number in my earlier post.

I have the part right here sitting in its lLand Rover box, part number: PEM 100990, (Sorry that's the genuine part) You are correct Scott they are for the Freelander but widely used by the V8 mob which is why I bought it.

My V8 has no issues so if I have an issue with the TD5 I'd like to use it for that.

I did test running temps on the Td5 last week around 77 to 82C in a day time temp of 30ish. Altitude of 4000 feet if that makes a difference?

My TD5 generally sits at cruise on 82-84 regardless of outside temp. Under load/towing up hills it will climb to 95. when over hill its back to the normal, so I think all is working oki. If temps rise and not come back down after working as in a hill there is something not right. It is my understanding with the thermostats spring rates controle the coolant bypass rate in relation to engine speed and coolant speed / pressure via the pump. lighter spring will bypass earlier than a hard? the actual opening temp of the thermostat is the same with all, 82c. The V8 has a higher temp at which the 'stat is fully open though, which I assume has to do with the pollution requirements. I think
    cheers scott
