My Disco tried to kill me again !

Out enjoying the bush with some friends on the June long weekend, doing a steep series of climbs. This particular climb had become covered with loose shale from pervious vehicles loosing traction. Near the top all forward motion stopped with wheels spinning.
I deliberately stalled it, selected reverse, off the clutch and brakes and hit the starter raced down the hill stopping at an erosion ditch. Engine didn't what to start. TC, ABS and engine lights on. Cleared the lights and got the motor started.
After my first failed attemp, the second go saw me stop in the same spot, TC seemed to stop working but no 3 amegos lights. Grabed the brakes to hold it, but started sliding backwards. Into reverse clutch out off brakes, picking up speed. Now starting to **** myself. Applied light brake pressure, ABS cuts in and get no effective braking. Crunch ! Hit side embankment, front slew around, thinking I'm going over, but we stop. Lucky boy.
This is the second time that something like this has happed to me in the Disco. Last time I was demo-ing the hill descent in reverse. Won't do that again.
All the other conventional 4wds I've had, I've never had problems reversing down hills.
I think the problem I'm having with this one is the three open diffs. I'm quite certain that had I'd locked the centre diff it would have been a different story. Mainly I would have made the climb in the first place. But most importantly, I'm sure I would have had better control reversing.
    What have I learnt ?
Fit the centre diff lock lever if you intend going off road and use it. $400 odd dollars is looking like cheep insurance.

    Sounds like a lucky escape.

That is where you went wrong (cdl) not the cars fault.
    Use it or loose it

I did Mt Coree on the weekend, right at the last slope I lost traction just like you, lo range and a different line fixed it, but had I used my CDL I reckon she would have done better. A bit scary isn't it!

Did something similar years ago in my 2000 D2 ( Before i re-enabled the CDL)

Ended up against an erosion control hump.... where I stayed for a while to let my heart rate slow and have a wipe.

Certainly an experience I'm not kean to repeat

I remember going on a mild track with a d2 years ago. It struggled a LOT due to the open center.

The other issue is your abs. I'd be rigging up a switch so you can turn off the slabs ecu.

Is that the only way to deactivate abs/tc? I thought I read starting the car with the CDL engaged would do it. Although I have never had any luck doing so.

I know there is conjecture on this Tombie. Some are for abs offroad; I'm dead against it. I feel in this situation if he were to be able to lock all the wheels a wedge of material would have built up and stopped the car. I've had exactly the same scenario happen on Grimme track in a 300 defender. We slid back almost 5 metres before we stopped, and it was only that wedge of material that did it.
