ABS in the bush is deadly, I disable it on everything
If anyone thinks no tthey are not driving steep/slippery stuff
CDL open on steep stuff will have the light end of the vehicle skidding, most usually the front when backing down, not good, with abs it will simply have you coasting backwards with little no no braking, even less good
ACTIVATE CDl
DEACTIVATE ABS

Your experience is not in question.
No need to get so defensive.
In my experience, the vehicle without ABS that I owned, had locked front and rear diffs and CDL on and I could not stop it in reverse on a recovery descent.
The ABS vehicles with CDL (without is a completely different kettle of fish) have never given me that experience.
Once below the threshold, ABS does not cut in under heavy braking, and as long as you have them all working balanced (all callipers in good order etc) have been able to reverse down without issue.
ABS at speed on loose surfaces is not about stopping sooner, it's all about avoiding what you would otherwise hit.
My driving style for both vehicle types is marginally different.
Perhaps - only perhaps - your situations are unique or your style of driving is different (not wrong, just different) and therefore achieves different outcomes.
I'm not defensive, just putting it out there....I've hardly spent any time up the bush in D3 and 4 so the results there may differ, but I've happily sailed down many hills with the pedal pulsing away with ABS activation, unable to stop when with the ABS disabled would of been no problem
You may find that if the vehicle you had without ABS was earlier disco or classic range and the tyres were 35"+ you would of had that effect unless you had upgraded the calipers to 110 units, the braking was extremely poor on them with large tyres
I've also had trouble on fast loose gravel with ABS proving to be a hinderance, Lots of bad experiences with ABS
Wiping off speed to get below the ABS threshold is the problem, if you are ascending or descending a steep hill, its very easy to exceed those very few km/hr and no longer have the ability to break, especially with wheels lifting
Then you drive in mud
Even my Hyundai Iload ABS, if I pull over to the side of the road and its wet and slippery, it will have the ABS activating and me continue to sail down the road
Its an excellent thing on asphalt roads though and generally that is where most drive the most km's
Appreciate your feedback.
Somthing we all should take note of when 4WD'ing without CDL

Around 1:00 take note!
Lack of CDL. I saw a vid about 10 years ago of a white td5 trying to reverse down a steep hill...nearly a roll over. ABS is good down hill off road. I find HDC rarely activates with my V8 in low first but it's good to have.
Cheers
Without wading in to the abs / noj abs debate, if things are getting interesting and you just want to stop - why not give the handbrake a pull?
Yes mate. It's an important tool...much better than electric fully on fully off on d3/4.
Cheers
