    Td5 intake manifold.

    Hey all.

Just got home from a month long field ex and thought, what better way to unwind than to remove the intake manifold to clean it and make replacing the fuel pressure regulator easier.

    Wrong way to unwind.

SWMBO knows she has to help put it back together as she has smaller hands and it is her car.

Has anybody cleaned the intake ports in the head.
If so what did you use and how did you go about it?

    Regards
    Will.

    Hello Will Wallace,

Find an engine reconditioner with an acid tank and get them to clean it. They won't charge too much and probably do a be job than most of us can do at home.

    Cheers,

    Jason

The manifold is soaking at the moment. It's the ports in the head that I am wanting to clean. And I don't want to remove the head just to do this.

    Regards
    Will.

oops, i'll read a little closer next time.

Something I got told by a reputed Land Rover mechanic is that if any of the black tar falls onto the backs of the valves if you're going to attempt to clean the inlet ports is that it will cause valve to burn, not immediately, it takes about six months or so. The black tar causes hot spots on the valves apparently.
The reason that I asked the mechanic about this topic originally was that a reputed Land Rover repairer(with over 35 years of experience!) returned a head to me with all that tar blasted down onto the back of the valves. It didn't look right to me so after a few enquieries, I found out about the trouble it could have caused down the track a little.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Sounds like to do it properly it would be a head off job.

I'm debating weather or not to do the head gasket while I have the intake manifold off it.

I had the bright idea years ago to hit it with the water gurney to remove the main crud from manifold as on acreage and had the room. Yep, most of it ended up on me from memory given all the angles. Somethings are best cleaned without power tools here. I would not worry about the ports so much as over time, the oil will work like a glacier perhaps. Is it that bad?

Well the head is off and off to be cleaned and checked for warp.

Original gasket was in there, so I guess it couldn't have hurt changing it and replace the plastic dowels. Surprised to see how little they had deformed after 210k.

Gasket looked in good order as do the pistons and bores.

    Photos to follow.

Find out about whether you need a 1,2 or 3 dot gasket when you put it back together + new head bolts etc. It will depend on how much is shaved off the head to flatten it out again, measurements need to be taken.....crucial ! ! ! !
It's not too difficult a job, but do it right.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Jason,

What are the crucial measurements that need to be taken and what are the tolerances?

I assume that one would be piston protrusion?

If the Td5 engine has the combustion chamber in the piston like a Tdi, and looking at RAVE this appears to be the case, machining the head makes no difference to the head gasket thickness.

You just check what the old gasket was and replace with the same.
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."
