Disco TD5 Long range Fueltank, replace main or sill

    Hi Everyone,
Just wondering from people experiences the downside/upside of a sill tank vs a swap of the OEM tank.

Do they make a sill tank for a D2?

On mine I have the ACE modulator and pipework on one side and the SLS compressor on the other, impossible to fit a decent sized tank in there, although without these options it may be different?

Not quite a sill tank, but they do make about 30 litres tank that go in behind the rear quarter panel on the rh side. Often used in gas conversions, but my old boss has one in his Td5 (May well be the same tank) as well as a replacement main tank. The previous owner obviously did or planned to do some serious touring - I think the boss managed to fit something like 140 litres on one fill up!

I think that small rear quarter tank is designed for use with the long range aux tank as it flows into it?

I'm sure it could be modified though?, not a huge gain for the amount of messing around though?

From memory, yes, the side tank is joined to the main at the bottom with a relatively small diameter hose. Haven't checked out the plumbing at the top though, but given the size of the hose at the bottom, I'd guess the main filler pipe feeds both tanks..

Shouldn't be to hard to just attach a low pressure electric carby fuel pump to the bottom fitting, plumbed back up into one of the filler neck hoses, and have a switch in the car. When you get down to say 1/4 of a tank, just flick the switch and start transferring fuel across...

Worth it? That's a different matter, depends how much you pay for the tank I guess!

And incidentally, I found just before that Long Range Automotive do actually make sill tanks for D2s, but I suspect that your correct in thinking you need to not have ACE, or not have SLS (or both). Although, it does say specify suspension type on their website, so maybe they have ones that are sculpted around those parts?

    Thanks for the link,

By the looks of it it fits in the Offside sill area, occupied by the ACE block, so if you had a disco without ACE you should be able to fit this tank - looks like a good fit too.

If I was to go either route this would be the preferable one for me - if it would fit that is.

If you don't have SLS then you can fit a 50l LRA sill tank or a 60l Brown Davis sill tank on the passengers side. Same on the drivers side if you don't have ACE. The sill tank in the LRA one at least is in the wheel well, so not too easy.

At the rear there are 2 part tanks from Long Range Automotive, Long Ranger and Brown Davis with capacities IIRC from about 140-200 litres depending on what you want in terms of quality or quantity. The companion tank links into the main tank with a small tube at the bottom of the tanks and the filler and I think breather are joined at the top also.

The amount of clearance you lose will depend on the size of the tank.
    Cheers

Disco TD5 Long range Fueltank, replace main or sill

Than you all for your feedback. Based on other research, whilst there are move moving parts, a sill tank seems to be the go. Seemingly, it has to do with better weight distribution and the loss of clearance (danger of puncture) when replacing main tank with a larger one.

I installed a s/h LRA drivers sill tank. In addition, I spent considerable time custom building a filler tube plumbed into the vehicle's filler point as I despised the wheel arch filler point. Whilst it is not perfect and a little slow to fill, it is user friendly and no need to worry about cleaning a muddy/dusty area in the wheel arch prior to filling. Don't like contamination in my fuel - especially with expensive pumps/injectors and the inconvenience of fixing them! I don't care if the vehicle has a filter or not, it's just better to not get contamination into the fuel in the first place - something that is likely with the wheel arch filler if care is not taken.
