Yep I lost the brake backing plates also, although I rescued them before they parted company by themselves.

    All good fun

Really weird that it is usually the LH rear backing plate that splits around the bolts. My RRC one split twice but I was able to weld it back together before it fell off.
BUT maybe the vibration damper is there to change the vibration frequency so that doesn't happen so much.

Just put them back on before you do a wet desert track! I stripped the rear brake pads from brand new back to bare metal on the rear of my defender in under 400kms on a wet Tanami track without them. Front pads which were also new suffered no damage whatsoever as the brake mud guards were still attached and kept the abrasive mud out of the way.

    A Silly Question

If the rear diff on a D2 needs a harmonic balancer, then, why the hell doesn't the front diff need a harmonic balancer also???

Because it has a double cardan joint.
RRCs had one on the front because they didn't have a double cardan joint.
Without a DC joint the speed variations on the front driveshaft are doubled.

You can see this with a lift where my lifted 76RRC used to resonate the RH front spring when going around RH curves.

I had the left rear brake shield come off completely, managed to find it in the bush, right rear had broken around 2 of the bolts and the right front has broken at the bottom bolt.

    Front left is still solid
